This is a bit of guesswork rather than a confimed answer, but if zombies are banging on something that thing will eventually break. There is a flag called thumpable in building definitions, and when enabled it lets zombies bang on things to break them; the "crafted metal walls are indestructable" mod removes this flag from crafted metal walls and that stops zombies banging on them at all.
