I have the same problem. I built this big base covering up the hole transport but then realised that I can´t se where I´m going, so yeah a remote control or portable sterring wheel would be really nice

What I do... is use K mode to zoom out and sail forward, noting which direction I want to go in, then I switch to normal mode, make the turn, then go back into K mode ot judge if I turned enough. Its not ideal.. but it works. Hopefully you aren't built so big that even in K mode you can't see... Otherwise I made my barge so that I could open a gate in the front, and have a clear sight line all the way forward. (though very constrained)
