I'll write a detailed guide which is for all mods in general, so if you see someone ask this question again, just forward them this message.

Congratulations! You've stepped into the world of modding, probably because you've done everything in vanilla and wanted to spice it up. I searched for ages on the steam workshop forums looking for a detailed explanation of how to install mods onto a server and found NOTHING. So let's start this from the beginning.

Just like any other steam game, you would expect that you install mods into the game simply by subscribing to it on the workshop, and you're not wrong, just not 100% right if you're also the host of the server.

When you click "Subscribe" it just downloads a mod to the PC that you are currently playing on, not necessarily your server. So let's explain that for you.

Installing a mod into an ARK: Survival Evolved DEDICATED server.

Please note that this guide was made for "My personal dragon" and subsequently will not be applicable in step 3 for other mods.

1) Subscribing to a mod on the workshop

The first thing you want to do is find a mod that you like in the Steam workshop and click "Subscribe", this will download all the files for the mod of your choice.

Once you've done this, head into your Ark directory and follow this path;

Steam directory>SteamLibrary>SteamApps>Common>ARK>Shootergame>Content

(NOTE: If the mods folder is already there do not delete it.)

Create a folder in this location and simply title it "mods" - then close down the directory.

2) Loading the game up in Singleplayer

Almost all guides that I looked at never said anything about loading into Singleplayer, even though this is possibly the most important step.

What you want to do is load up Ark, and select "Host/Local" - you should now have a screen with a bunch of options. Look at the "mods" section and move your mod to the right side, titled "Active mods" using the arrows in the middle.

Once done, click "play singleplayer" and let it load up.

3) Making sure the mod is okay.

Assuming that you are actually playing the game and are not in a mass dying-respawning loop, congratulations! You've got the mod working!

But how exactly do you know that the mod is working? Well, fortunately for you, this particular mod has summon commands for the dragon. Press the tab key on your keyboard and look at the visually-pleasing black bar that appears at the bottom of your screen.

That is admincheat menu if you didn't know that already, you can enter all sorts of command into that to mess around with your server. What you need to do is type;

cheat summon dragon_Character_BPnew_C

This command should summon a dragon on your current player location. If it doesn't, your mod is busted and you have to start the process all over again.

If the dragon does spawn, press escape and exit back to the main menu. That's the hard bit out of the way.

4) Getting ready to install the mod

Now that you've successfully tested the mod and know it works in the current version, hop into your ark directory again and enter the mods folder you created in step 1. E.g;

Steam directory>SteamLibrary>SteamApps>Common>ARK>Shootergame>Content>Mods

Welcome to the mods folder! Here you should see a folder and a unrecognised file type (.mod) that have the same number.

These numbers are the modID's and they are what will enable you to turn on a mod in your server. For this particular mod, your modID is: 520571584.

Select both the folder AND the .mod file, copy them with Ctrl + C and follow the next step.

5) Installing the mod into your server.

The next few steps are where this gets a bit more complicated. This time, go into your server's Ark directory and follow the same path as in step 1 and 4. Again, if the mods folder doesn't exist in the contents, make sure to create it like you did in step 1.

Once in the mods folder, paste the two files you copied earlier in and wait for it to transfer (typical times for me to do this with this mod are 20-30 minutes, but yours may vary greatly).

Congratulations! The mod is now in your server, but there's one more thing you have to do first.

6) Final step! Adding the mod into the command lines.

Chances are that when you purchased your dedicated server you recieved a control panel which you can access via the internet. You're going to need that for this last bit.

The control panel should look something like this;

If you've been trying to install mods to your server without knowing what you're doing, chances are you've been here a lot restarting your server frantically hoping to God that it will work... and it didn't, so let's do it right this time.

See the button labelled "Commandline Manager"? You're going to need to click that.

Once in there, you will see two different tabs at the top of the screen, Prededfined commandlines and Custom Commandlines. You're going to click the Custom tab.

If there isn't already a commandline in this section, simply click "new" on the hotbar above.

Once you've got a commandline there, you want to look at the right of the screen and click the "edit" button. This will bring up a load of different fields in which you fill out all sorts of custom things, such as taming speeds and difficulty.

Assuming that you've already set this up how you wish (if not, do that now) - you're going to look for "ActiveMods" and "GameModIds". In BOTH of those fields you need to enter the ModID, which also happens to be the name of the folder that the mod was installed into!

(For My personal dragon, here is the ModID: 520571584)

NOTE: If you have more than one mod in the "ActiveMods" tab I would strongly recommend putting this mod at the end and NOT first.

Once you've done that, make sure that you've ticked those fields to update by checking the tickbox on the left. Then scroll all the way down to the bottom and click save.

If you've done this all right, when looking at the commandline it should say "Activemods=520571584" or something similar.

If that's not there, you've messed up somewhere and will have to check back.

Restart your server and wait for it to load. Your mod should now be installed into the server!

(It might be worth checking by using the same command that came up in step 3 when logged into the server)

---
Hopefully that's helped clear things up and will get your server running this mod in no time. After all, that's exactly how I install it and change it about when needed, so I know that it works.

Happy modding. :)
