Egg Collector vs Incubator

So I understand the Collector powers the Incubator. And I understand the Collector can be Locked and Unlocked to collect Fertilized Eggs.

What I don't understand, is why when I drop an egg (it should be considered Fert) and the collector picks it up within the 30 second "ping" timer.

Am I doing something wrong?
