Atmospheric Drag & Re-Entry Effects

Entry Burn Up
I would like to see a feature where if a ship undegoes too much drag, it begins to burn up (reentry into planet maybe?) and damage the blocks that undergo tho most drag.
If this is a workable feature, let me know! id love to see it happen!

This is next up... I have a working beta version of this right now that I'm testing. It's pretty spectacular but needs some work still. Need to tweak some numbers and make sure it's stable and wont make too much of a performance hit.

id love to halp you beta test it, if i can

@ElegantSquid add me and we'll work something out

Awesome! I really like the idea - if I wouldn't work for about 60 hours a week I'd definitely like to beta test this, but... yea... no time :|

ill help beta test it if you like
so long as it just that 1 mod and maybe like 4 more but that the max mods i will use :jcube:

If you want, I am also willing to beta test the mod for you. I can test just that mod using vanilla items and do different tests using it

In order to implement this properly the mod needs to add heat shielding blocks to allow safe re entry

especially with the spawn in drop pods since they only have atmo thrusters for breaking which dont become active untill near the ground'

I would suggest making heat shielding very fragile that way combat damage will be more likley to cause issues durring reentry and make damage controll more important

@Mike Loeven I'm not a big fan of adding blocks to the game because I think they start to become fluff when you have too many blocks from mods. I was considering reusing heavy armor as a heat shield.

What you said about the atmospheric lander starting ship is a very good comment but my first guess is that you will reach a terminal velocity under the compression heating threshold and if you do start to take on heat the blocks probably won't heat up enough to actually take damage. I'll test this out in my developmental version with Re-Entry effects

I think you may have to, Heavy armor Is just pure metal. You'd have a tough ship that Resists Heat too, And requires ONLY metal for some reason ...
Having a heat shield, It could require like Silicon, and be fragile to hits, Making it not usable as armor, so that people don't just coat their ship in the stuff, Because Otherwise Reentry Heating almost doesn't matter if we can just add a few metal plates and It goes alright.

I agree with this statement here.... i feel like your silicon heat sheild idea is brilliant. i am also envisioning a coolant system using ice to make water, and basically lowers the heating factor on the overall ship.... costing many parts (or using a conveyor system, or being a massive block) will ensure that designing a dropship will become more realistic. from this, you could design seperate cooling sytem tiers, which would decrease the heating factor more and more.

touching on the heat sheild system again, it would be annoying to do because of how many blocks would need to be made (its like armour blocks, so variation is key) but it would be wworth it in the end because if you wanted to create a ship that is to leave and enter atmosphere consistantly (drop ship, mining/resource transfer) then it would likely need alot of hydrogen, plus alot of water, plus alot of silicon heat sheilds.... making survival much more difficult.from here, maintaining the weak heat sheild blocks would be another task, and i gotta say, i love maintenence in this game.... its stupid without it. its one of the only true survival aspects that it offers

P.S. with the addition of water generators to the game.... would people design life support systems requiring water to survive!?!?!?!!!!

Make the 'heated' areas glow, and see if you can make the colours more gradual between heated areas :D
Mike Loeven 15 Dec, 2015 @ 6:28am
My idea for heat shielding was to have merge attached panels floating around an orbital station and have the ships just attach them when landing and taking off

i've been beta testing with comfyfutons, and i can tell you that glowing is not an option and this current time. visible effects are present, but hopefully he will find a new method to make the effect a little bit better.
This eary on, and with the progress he has made so far, even just in hip drag exeeds any other development expectations in my mind

@Wolfiy visual effects and particle effects aren't moddable right now. Ship block color is in the "hue saturation value"(HSV) format instead of "red green blue" (RGB) format which makes for some strange color changing when trying to shift torward red since you can't basically add red but rather just shift torward it on the hue spectrum. In the future I plan on converting HSV to RGB and then shifting to red then back to HSV to apply the block color every time I change colors. This should make it seem like its gaining red rather than shifting over the color spectrum torward red.

@AllRequestingHeatShields
I am reading and considering all your suggestions but need to think hard about what I want to do here... I feel like some of that will be best placed as a seperate mod. I really don't want to make this mod too bloated. Also, I am not a model editor or graphic designer and I think this would be best accomplished by a modder with experience adding models. However this is not a final decision it all depends on what I have time for.
