Dark Wood Lore (My version)
First and Foremost, this is easily my most favorite map in Left 4 Dead 2. Played this 20 times now and still does not get old. I tried to find an "official lore" for this map but couldn't find an official one. So decided to write one, a bit of it that is :P

Intro
Dark Wood is a L4D story in which the survivors find themselves encountering an origin of the undead within secret and shocking places that were never known to the world.

-------------------------[LORE]-------------------------

The Woods
It was probably a normal forest for days, and a part of the secret government land forever. The "restricted area" fence that the survivors were forced to run to was something you'd sort of see in Resident Evil or movies that had "secret hidden facilities". Nothing much to say here.

The Construction Sites - Probably an extension of the Athena Labs U/C
Again nothing much to say about this place, but I believe it was construction to expand the secret Athena Labs. Though, that section that looked like a power core (the red laser thingies), is probably a newer generation power core being experimented and to be used for this new section of the Athena Labs.

The secret Athena Labs - one of the origins of the undead?
What I felt was that these places were built secretly by the government for top secret human mutation testing purposes for whatever reasons they want. But it felt like Athena Labs were one of the places where the undead originated, considering it probably all started from a mutation gone wrong, causing a cluster of undead to rise from that place.

In the panic, I believe they tried to pull the plug by destroying the lab via destroying the power core just like in the campaign. But the labs were overrun so quickly that almost all the lab workers were caught, turned into the undead. I believe people who managed to escape the Labs were already infected with the undead virus, but they were not mutating into the undead, similarly to how the COVID-19 virus can infect someone and they only show symptoms weeks later, while also infecting others too.

The Asylum Prison - a brutal prison where no prisoner should live forever... Right?
Just like the Athena Labs, the Asylum Prison, considering they were so close to each other, was a secretly built prison not known to the world too. It was so bloody and brutal; it looked like blood and hell on Earth that no one should live or rot in there forever.

I believed the Prison existed a long time ago before the Athena Labs was built, probably as a new "experimental" prison project, deep underground so that prisoners cannot escape easily compared to a max security land prison. However, judging by how horrifying the place looks, I bet the government instead uses it more as a fun slaughter prison for seriously convicted criminals -- They probably lie to the public about certain serious criminals being punished with capital punishment (being put down/death sentence/etc) but instead sent them to this prison just for the fun of them slaughtering each other to death and destroying their bodies (with that automated compactor you see).

After the Athena Labs was built and the undead outbreak happens, the government probably used the prisoners in this prison as forced test subjects (since they are "DEAD" of course). This was only successful for a short period of time when everything became a lot worse - undead went out of control in the prison and they instead used the prison as a storage place for the common undead, until the labs were overrun, which made the place even more bloody and horrible.

How do you officially get to the Prison? I believe they took all the convicts onto a government train and stop in this tunnel section, unload them there and you go into a safe door that leads to this deadly prison. No other train driver who drove their trains past that door knew, it led to the secret place and like any other train tunnel door, it looked like a normal door you'd commonly find.

So.. This is it I guess, what do you think about my version of Dark Wood's Story and Lore? What about your views?
