If you are unsuccesful and got a mac or a linux, you can still play the single player without WSE, as long as you don't mind script errors and none functional co-op/multiplayer.
I guess you can try emulating WSELoader.exe with something like Wine in Linux, I'm unfamiliar with the emulation tools macs have, it'll be your best shot if you don't have the knowledge to compile WSE.
With M&B, however, the game runs with all the taskbars and overlayed, even if its set to fullscreen. It's actually incredibly frustrating to deal with, as even looking down or up in game will highlight the apps on the taskbars. Any help appreciated.
