-same as it was in HL1...
Someone obviously hasn't compared the two enough as the level design is improved by quite a bit (especially the first section).
-tripmines are useless...
They are some of the best trap-setters in the game. If you know where enemies are going to be (such as on a replay or dying there in the past) you can plant tripmines to take them out. For instance you can use specific tripmine placements in Power Up to deal with one of the ambushes there, or combine them with explosive barrels to knock out spawning aliens in some fights throughout the game.
