What's the difference between death sentance and a normal overwatch shot?

Normal overwatch shot only applies to movement, not enemy fire.
It's basically Opportunist.

*Covering fire. And this is already an ability in XCOM so why make a new one?

Probably because it doesn't exist in Xcom 2. Because Firaxis.

No it is an existing ability. It's in the specialist tree at Captain.

Covering Fire is gonna be removed due to AWC conflicts. Covering Fire is a passive that procs with Overwatch (meaning you can only get 1 shot in). Death Sentence is an active skill you can set up to ambush multiple enemies at once in one turn. The skill is basically if Killzone and Covering Fire had an aggressive love child that likes to run into other kids and beat their faces in.

But yes, the description should be more clear about that, so you'll see it changed in the next update.
