Idea Thread
(This was originally a response to someone's 10 comment long feedback post, I figured it'd be better suited in a discussion thread.)
Woah, that’s a lot to step through so I apologize in advance if I miss a point, here goes.

The idea was not that Womp would have to kill the tentacle himself. Tentacles will die from battling things that Womp leads to them, and as a result, he could potentially get his comrade back if a spot drops. I agree that Womp killing tentacles is unfitting, and I even wanted to add a sanity loss per hit when you attack them (haven’t done that because I want to make the targeting system not auto-target tentacles when you press attack).

Him being friends with tentacles is a side effect more so than a main perk, he wasn’t released with the ability to move/spawn tentacles because I didn’t want him to have it in the first place due to the fact that a good collection of tentacles can trivialize almost any fight in the game when you don’t have to worry about the tentacles yourself. While Webber does have a lot of control over his spider brothers, that is his largest perk, Webber doesn’t even have half of the individual strengths that Womp has.

In regard to Webber having cave spider friends, Womp does gain a large sanity boost when near the large cave tentacles, and the baby ones ignore Womp completely even while he’s beating on the large one. (So that is a very low risk source of spots btw). You mentioned Webber’s beard making winter easier, so I’ll point out that Womp entirely ignores the downsides of spring, and gains half his wetness in summer heat protection at the cost of getting colder a little faster in winter. Summer only gets worse for Womp if you actually start overheating.

Also I think you’re giving way too much credit to Webber’s ability to get spider drops, like other characters can’t get them just as easily (especially in a multiplayer environment.), albeit with a bit more risk depending on which character. For example, Wigfrid could walk into a spider village and walk out the next day with every drop needed, all the tier 3 dens replanted to tier 1, and still be at full health and sanity to boot. Granted, Wigfrid is overpowered. Womp is not supposed to be a direct comparison to Webber anyways, Webber having a spider army is his deal, Womp has his own stuff outside of being friends with tentacles.

Tentacle friends are not in any way supposed to be an end-all-be-all for Womp’s obtainment of anything, much less food. The spots would become useful to Womp as they will be the item he uses to spawn another tentacle, existing recipes that use spots are irrelevant.

On combat; it’s a 10% speed boost while above 80 wetness. The dodge chance is equal to half of his wetness at any time while above 20; a 50% chance to dodge when at max wetness. To counter this, he loses wetness equal to a quarter of damage taken when he’s hit. So a little math here, assuming Womp is wearing armor with 80% protection (common stuff like football helm or log suit.), let’s say he gets smacked by Bearger. That’s 20 damage taken if he doesn’t dodge, which will take 5 off his wetness. Assuming Womp is now at 95 wetness, he still has a 47.5% chance to dodge, but we shouldn’t forget that Womp generates wetness over time and would regen a tiny bit more back before Bearger even wound up another attack. Could you get very unlucky and still die to Bearger in 6 slaps? Absolutely. You could even die in 1 ground pound hit, as could plenty of other characters. But I suppose this is a bad example because nobody should be face tanking a Bearger – though you could take these same numbers and apply it to Womp fighting spiders without armor. My point is that his dodge chance is actually borderline overpowered, and is the entire reason I brought his health down so far. If you kite in combat (with any character) you should almost never get hit in the first place. Womp’s run speed makes kiting even easier, and his dodge chance theoretically doubles his effective health in the event that you can’t kite.

On wetness generation; as I’ve said previously, I think that wetness is already way too easy to keep at max. I did want to make it easier to lose wetness, while also adding in a way to gain a quick boost of wetness at the cost of something else like, press R to turn 20 hunger into 10 wetness rather than carry around an arbitrary stack of wet goop just in case (though there are pros and cons in each of those ideas).

I don’t think he needs any further self-healing than what’s already available. Probably wouldn’t want to use spots for that once they’re used for spawning tentacles anyway. Creating tentacle spikes doesn’t sit well with me either, as they are the lopped off tip of a tentacle, and having tentacles be renewable means you’ll probably have a surplus of spikes laying around already. The merms are Womp’s most hated creature, no friendliness there, sorry.

I feel like your closing paragraph implies that Womp is not already special and distinguished from the mass of unoriginal, unimaginative, unbalanced, and probably many more un-word characters that are out there already. While this is entirely subjective (and I don’t really mean to sound arrogant – but I’m gonna), I have to say Womp is probably in the tier of highest quality characters I’ve seen in terms of originality, mechanics, and fitting in with the style and theme of the game. Granted, we did obviously start our ideas from creatures that already exist in-game, but I think we took it in a good direction. However, I’m definitely not trying to say this is the only direction a tentacle themed character could have gone to be great.

I want to note that we didn’t release Womp until we thought he was functionally complete. I was definitely not expecting a flood of new ideas and expectations from users considering Womp’s list of perks is already pretty long (and I didn’t even list everything!). The only reason I’m going to implement tentacle spawning is because I was already on the fence about doing it. To go through and implement some of the ideas anyone puts in the comments could require an entire rebalance or remake of the character. That’s not to say that it’s out of the question, surely. In some 2.0 version or something (whenever we decide to do custom animations, maybe?), I could revamp him entirely, taking ideas from all this feedback (which is greatly appreciated, by the way). That will come in time, as I gain more experience with Don’t Starve’s systems and modding api, and LUA in general (I’m a C# developer, that will come quickly).

Additionally, our current schedule is to implement the tentacle spawning, and then set Womp aside for a bit while we work on our next character - which has been in conception since before Womp. Our ideas for new content expand much further than just characters, too. So I’m saying that Womp can’t remain our focus forever (not that that’s what you were asking us to do, this is just a PSA). We want to have time to dedicate to other mods (oh and jobs and sleep and life and that nonsense).

Swamp is perfect the way he is!
I still think you should add new unique swamp items though.
Womp* Idk why i said swamp >.<
Make sure to prevent attacking tentacles by pressing f, along with some sort of tentacle spawning machanics, before moving on to the next thing. Other than that problem, the character is great! One of the few in the workshop which isn't just +/- base statistics or OPer than Wigfrid. The art and custom voice/dialogue is great too, and really helps it fit into the game.
i have only modded a few games in the past so if im wrong with modding this game please disregard, but if you want context for spawning tenticles there is a tenticle spawning book, you might be able to use that to help you create an item that spawns tenticles
How about that using razor results in -40HP, and tentacle spots drop, you can use it once in 3 days?

Make womp more centered around the swamp. like, he dries off slowly when out of the swamp and moisterises very quickly when in the swamp.

Womp could use an item or something to get wet faster but other than that this is awesome!
Maybe, when he's above 90 wetness or something high, he could regen health at like 1 per minute or something
