Despite the limitations conditioned by the game engine (which seems to be highly unwilling to animate flexible bodies, like the suspended hook), the crane is really working.
I advise you to use it really carefully. If you don’t use it against the human logic, all will be just fine.
At the moment, the crane is stable with load weights up to 2-2.5 tons. Heavier loads may make it fall down.
And another thing: try not to put the winch point of the object too close to one of the hook – in case the distance between those two is less than the hook length, the crane just takes off :)
As for the control, the wasd+qe thing has failed to work here. Obviously, it’s ok for particular situations only, being meant for the default cranes control. Now you have two functional keys instead of six, so to control the cabin, arrow or the hook, you are to select it from the menu, and use R/T.
