Small Ship Variant for Tunneling
So I read your Q/A about the small ship variant. A thought ocurred to me the other day that this thing is a fantastic tunnel-boring device. The large ship version is, obviously, too large to do any boring from inside a tunnel, though. I imagined some sort small ship version that was compact enough to fit on a reasonably sized vehicle and be used to make nice, straight tunnels and flat rooms inside asteroids and planets/moons.

My proposal deviates from the standard "make a small beam drill!" idea in that the device need not do any actual mining at all. It would effectively function like the alternate fire mode of any regular drill, destroying any voxel material within range to create a path to whatever your target is. Foregoing the mining function would conceivably allow a few concessions from your stated position on the potential small ship version:

1) the device could consist of only the base block, removing the need to do any coding for another turret piece.
2) the power requirements could be brought down considerably given that the block isn't mining/processing and that, as I imagine would be done, the max range would be reduced. (Maybe to 100-200m?)
3) the block size could be reduced to perhaps the size of a small grid large cargo container and bore a hole a few blocks wider than that. (Otherwise it would have the same limitations as the current beam base and not fit into its own tunnels.)

Of course, this is just a suggestion and not a 'request' per se, though it would be an awesome addition for me personally. haha

What do you think?

Shaostoul is working on small ship models. He's been delayed, but they're coming.
Along with that, I'll be adding adjustable bore widths, which will affect power usage.
When those are ready, I'll be posting an update.

Awesome

I would suggest to make the small one like the big one, like a 1x1 (big block measure) so it bekome 1/9 of the big one. Energy consumption should bee in proportion to the big one. I mean if the big one has 800m the small one should be about 800/9= ca 88m and the same for the energy. It will be allot, but reasonable. For the tunneling. Should be good making a main tunnel to the ore vein with the big one and then you could use the small one on a small grid, go inside the main tunnel it's done.

If you buildthe base without the turret, it bores a very nice tunnel. The turret is only required for autamated drilling.

yes but iff you make it whit the turneble turrets on it you can make a small-blok hulk like in eveonline and thats whay more cooler

That's exactly the thought I had. I'm working on building a EVE online Orca, and I feel the small ship variant would be necessary for gathering the sheer bulk of materials I need (definitely the uranium and magnesium for ARC reactor power for these things)

maybe try going for compleetly vanilla but only use the small block version off the automated beam eve online mining lasers

you can also use the large normal reactors depent on how you use it lol
the arc reactor is a modded 1 dont use modded reactors

So yea, small variants are coming... At least tell that you won't be developing it anymore, it's 4 years now, come on.
