I feel like im doing something wrong
i have 2 colonists who can cut wood. for the sake of testing i set wood cutting to priority 1. i set a target of 500 wood at all times, all types of wood allowed, under "wood logging", with everything checked except "calculate distance based on actual path". i have my manager go to the bench several times, and no one is cutting wood. drafted/undrafted them several times to reset what they are working on, never going for wood.

When i found this mod i thought it would be a godsend but honestly i feel like either it flat out doesnt work, or works so occasionaly i end up manually designating a bunch of stuff myself all the time.

I've found it works best without the "Full grown trees only" selected, unless there's a ton of trees.

If you mouseover the threshold area, does it tell you some stats? (200 in storage, 100 expected from designation).

Of all the plant based resources that you chose to try to automate, you pick wood.
The kind that takes a long time to harvest meaning your pawns are dangerously vulnerable while doing so, usually far away from your walls. The kind that doesn't rot, and only deteriorates when left unroofed so slowly that you usually go through it before it does.
Seriously, just chop everything while keeping a close watch for predators, stockpile thousands of wood and then automate the food and drugs.
