wyvern talons

I know that sometimes I get a wyvern talon for killing it and sometimes I do not. Is it just a chance of getting one, or do you have to kill it a particular way?

I killed a fire wyvern with a dodowyvern and did not get one.

I got a BP for dragron gloves (I think) that requires wyvern talons (fire, ice, poison) to make.

Did you check the body/item bag? Otherwise I guess it's just random.
