Feeding Breed Fish

I must be really dense because I have no idea how I am to feed the fish I am breeding. I have a hopper next to the aquaponic pool but my fish keep dying because there's no food. What am I missing?

never mind. one of the pawns finally put some rice in the hopper and everything works now.
