Me being in the Portuguese Army myself I find this expansion very exciting and worth taking a few notes about, but knowing the army's equipment extensively there is a lot of inconsistencies that I find when comparing the content of this addon to the real life counterpart it tries to represent, heres a couple that are crossing my mind right now:
The combat fatigues are not at all accurate to what the real uniform actually looks like, but the camo pattern textures is decent actually, other than that, the whole skin is just a retexture of the "Guerilla Apparel" outfit used by FIA units in A3, it provides for a resonable well made placeholder, but keep in mind that there is no generally employed combat shirt currently in use by the army in DPM camo, it actually exists but is still a prototype, there are a couple articles about it in the "Exercito" magazine, plus I heard of OE units (Rangers) actually using it already so this is the least I want to fuss about. This being said the upper part of the standard uniform is composed of a traditional four pocket military dolman with a belt overlayed over the two lower pockets, A3 actually has a couple uniforms that make for potential candidates for a reskin in DPM camo, such as the AAF and CSAT officer fatigues.
The real pants have two outer cargo pockets on the side of each knee, two inner pockets around the hips (not the outer flipstyle ones visible in the Guerilla Apparel), and two outer buttock pockets.
As for the boots it would be nice if someone would bother modeling a couple proprietary models currently used in the army, such as the M88 or M98 (recrutex), M88 Especial do Exercito, AT or even PQ boots.
As for gloves it would be nice to see some popular professional brands modeled in, a lot of people in operational battalions either of SF nature or regular infantry use widespread gloves like Mechanix, I seen a couple models available for A3 already, maybe that could be added in.
The berets themselves look pretty cool and are actually up to date, there is little to say on this regard, I love it.
The vests are again, reskins of original A3 models but these themselves were modeled mostly after real life tactial\balistic vests, still, it would be good to see the specific model used by the army making it to this addon. The tactical vests being used are "Militia" patented and used to be produced by Blackhawk, the newer models are produced by 5.11. As for the balistic vests I don't know the exact manufacturer, but its basically just a vest with no pockets or casings, just plain MOLLE system for completely modular setups, the vest is also in DPM camo. Also one thing that would be cool add as a vest is the M64, with either H shaped suspenders or Y shaped ones, it is a very outdated load bearing combat system but is still used to this day by most units during combat courses or basic recruitment. the M64 is a proprietary copy manufactured by the OGFE, of the A.L.I.C.E. load bearing system developed by the US army.
The helmets are actually fine as they are, the AAF helmets are almost identical to the ones used by the army so I guess the reskin is good enough. For the record the helmets the army uses are the PASGT and M88, all original US models, also some cheap knockoffs made in India were bought more recently.
As for the weapons, any suitable weapon addon does the trick, however we are still to see a decent GALIL weapon pack being made for A3, I was hoping Toadie would release a NIArms pack for that, but so far no luck.
And I guess thats it, there is still a lot to improve on before this expansion becomes an actual representation of the equipment used by the Portuguese Army, but so far I like it and has superior effort put to it than the older PAF expansion that was in my opinion, pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Good luck with this addon.
When I begun to make this mod I decided to got with the vanilla models because it’s easier to do the re-skin but mainly because some issues with permissions to use 3D models made by other people.
I still call it a project since like you said there is a long way to go and the only way to be done right would be for me to do the 3D models by myself and unfortunately I do not have time right now. :-(
However I will continue to improve it and add new stuff as long I have time and feedback.
Thank you very much for the effort and time that you put in this comment. That’s is a really constructive and detailed comment with a lot of information since most the information I add was from googling it using the operacional.pt website.
Cheers,
Marcovski
Cumprimentos,
Marcovski
