I think this could work if a shield generator object was added to the mod, possibly with different variants for different sized protection areas. It would have to be pretty expensive though, and there would have to be some way to override it - you know, to keep people from teleporting to you and "protecting" your entire ship.
OH! I don't even know if this is possible with the modding API, but maybe it could be given an internal battery that works like the player's battery and is drained when someone tries to break a protected block. If the battery is just the right size, it would make it so that going after a protected base "wouldn't be worth it," but you'd still be able to break through the shield if you really wanted to.
