V.89 Renders the Game Virtually Unplayable
If you have difficulty with the AI cheating don't get this mod because the cheating with this mod is particularly distressing. Its so bad that at Prince level the game is unplayable. And the worst is in combat. First the program senses when you're preparing for war and invariably pushes your unhappiness levels up and miraculously stages a revolt or 2. Secondly, your range units can never shoot and your opponents can always shoot. I've had repeated situations where I cant shoot the enemy over forest but they can shoot at me. And no, they are not on elevated ground. Indeed I recall a time when I was on a hill (but couldn't shoot) and the enemy was below me (and could shoot); Ive had situations where I could first shoot from a position and then the next turn couldn't shoot from that same position (in exactly the same situation). Third, the range of the enemy's units are enhances to absurd levels. Skirmishers that race through 2 hexes of forest, shoot twice and then race away (again through forest) to an untouchable safe distance. Next turn my skirmisher moves 2 hexes shoots but cant run away. Fourth, it doesn't matter how technologically superior your units might be they do so little damage when they are allowed to shoot or melee that you hardly make a difference. Invariably I find that for each move in a battle I will lose 4 units to the enemy's 1. Fifth, and the worst aspect, is that the unhappiness levels are just enhanced with this mod. By mid game your unhappiness levels are so bad that you cant get money, your cities are revolting 1 by one and automatically going over to the enemy. Meanwhile during the same time China, in its war with another Civ is taking city after city (I counted 6 large cities in all) and its happiness levels are unaffected remaining in the +50 to +100 range. Ive used the other Vox Populi mods but this one has just rendered the game impossible to play (maybe if you play at level 1 and turn off the unhappiness factor).

I've had the exact same problem. It's fine for the early ages, but as you progress in age, you're just fighting an uphill battle. I recorded a -62 unhappiness during my last game. That shouldn't even be possible. I love the way this mod alters the game, I love the features it includes, but it puts so great a handicap on the other players that I can barely play

Just finished another game I had to abandon because of the absurd "unhappiness" algorithm. You get to a point in the late game when unhappiness keeps surging up no matter what you do. No matter how many buildings you build that say "reduces distress significantly" or "reduce poverty significantly" etc the unhappiness just keeps climbing. And don't believe what they say about Courthouses. Each time I sweat on the courthouse finishing thinking that's going to bring down unhappiness? Wrong! Every time (and I mean every time) I finish a Courthouse in the late game the unhappiness level goes up, not down (you can set your watch by it) .

My trouble is I keep persisting with this Mod and I really have to give it away. In this latest game I pushed unhappiness to over 400 (And thats after (i) building 3 times more wonders than my closest rival; (ii) getting my allied city states to take my rival's cities instead of me and (iii) always liberating city states that my rivals annexed). I was losing 1500 gold per turn and no matter how many military units I sold for cash I remained 1500 gold in the red every turn. I have no doubt if I sold every military unit I possessed I would still be 1500 gold in the red next turn.

Frankly the "Unhappiness" algorithm doesn't work and in its present state it renders the game absolutely unplayable!!!

I played 4 games on "immortal" with 0.89 and never had such happiness problems.

My problem is, that the offence skill for f.ex. lanciers (all horse based and later tank units are affected)
gives em defence bonus too. Resulting in nearly unbeatable cavs, because their only weakness is now gone. And me on the other hand doesnt get such boni and normal units like a musceteer gets FULL damge when a frigate fires at him IN a citadel.

Its a pity, because the non mod game cheats like crazy on immortal, reg. tech.

By the way, there should be no war weariness in a successful war, where the enemy only looses.
Look at the germans, nobody was unhappy when they conquered france easly. After Stalingrad war weariness signifcantly increased of course.

>First the program senses when you're preparing for war and invariably pushes your unhappiness levels up and miraculously stages a revolt or 2.

This is not true.

>Secondly, your range units can never shoot and your opponents can always shoot. I've had repeated situations where I cant shoot the enemy over forest but they can shoot at me.

The enemy probably had the indirect fire promotion

>Third, the range of the enemy's units are enhances to absurd levels. Skirmishers that race through 2 hexes of forest, shoot twice and then race away (again through forest) to an untouchable safe distance.

The enemy receives no movement or range bonuses.

> Fourth, it doesn't matter how technologically superior your units might be they do so little damage when they are allowed to shoot or melee that you hardly make a difference.

Enemy combat strength is only modified if you are a heavy warmonger, but the penalty applies both ways if the AI is a warmonger.

> Fifth, and the worst aspect, is that the unhappiness levels are just enhanced with this mod. By mid game your unhappiness levels are so bad that you cant get money, your cities are revolting 1 by one and automatically going over to the enemy.

I'm not sure what version of the mod you are on. Please note that the happiness system for VP was recently overhauled, and is soon to move out of beta.

Hey g_e_r_y thanks for reminding me of another problem I have with the mod. When I take a city, no matter how powerful and how healthy my unit inside the city is, 1 pot shot from an enemy unit will completely destroy my unit. Whereas a similar unit outside the city only suffers the usual damage you would expect from a pot shot. After this happened to me a few times I took the following precaution. That is, I took a city with a tank and then replaced it with a fully healthy tank. Next turn a badly injured enemy musket (its health registered a very very low red) took a pot shot and completely destroyed my new fully healthy tank inside. Just crazy!!!

Hey Gazebo. The Mod I'm using is V.89 and sorry to have to say but it is true. I find in the late stage game my happiness status miraculously changes to unhappiness as the build up to war progresses and this is almost invariably the case when a peace treaty with a serious rival is about to expire. Indeed I recall a case when in the space of about 4 moves I went from about 50 happy to 2 happy just before war broke out and 24 unhappy 3-4 moves later and much worse as the war progressed. And you think, why the hell did I waste my time getting all those technologically superior units only to be beaten each time by technologically inferior units because my fighting abilities are always weakened by unhappiness.

On your other points. In some of my battles the enemy goes through countless units (many of them just bought as its losses accumulate). Don't tell me they all have the indirect fire promotion.

As for the Skirmishers, what I said in my original post is what actually happened. The skirmishers would race through 2 hexes of forest, shoot twice and then race away (again through forest) to an untouchable safe distance. Sooooo Annoying!!!

Gazebo, please see the comment I posted about a day ago. I decided to give this mod 1 more chance (on Prince) and the same thing happened. By 1948 in the atomic era I had to give the game away because my unhappiness levels were so high (between 200 and 400 overall unhappiness) I was losing 1500 gold per turn and had to keep selling units to continue. And even though for well over 200 turns I kept building buildings that supposedly reduced distress/poverty/illiteracy "significantly" my unhappiness steadily kept going up not down. And this is about the 3rd time I've had to abandon the game for this reason. It really does ruin the game.

@impsartacus2: Honestly: i cant understand how you can have problems at prince ??? without boni of higher difficultys the ai sucks so much, even emperor is so boring that i win always. Most of what you write about, i had NEVER. Yes, units take damge when IN city, but i NEVER had an instant kill of a unit with full hp. And the happiness seems like an unmodded immortal game for me.

g_e_r_y 4 May, 2019 @ 1:40am
@gazeebo: the bonis of the citadels at immortal seem to be gone. My musceteers IN citadel get much more dmg. then usual through crossbow man, which are outdated.
imspartacus2 4 May, 2019 @ 4:08am
g_e_r_y I dont understand it either but all that I have written is what is happening to me. When I play this mod and take a city I always try to move the unit out of the city straight away because if I leave it there and the enemy shoots it will be completely destroyed no matter how healthy and no matter how powerful the unit is. No exaggeration, I have had Destroyers (registering a healthy green) completely killed after 1 shot from a cavalry unit. Indeed this has happened to me a few times because navel melee units exhaust their turn after taking a city (tanks don't).

As for the unhappiness factor, I used to build farms every chance I got but changed that once I realised that high populations breed unhappiness. I really dont know whats going wrong but when I get to the late game on Prince the unhappiness is so bad that I bleed $$$ after every turn (and my units are woefully ineffective) to the point where I have to sell so many units I cant afford to defend myself. Indeed if a revolt breaks out in my home territory I have to move units from miles away to finally defeat them and invariably they leave the place pillaged to the ♥♥♥♥ with everything burning. And just so we're clear, in the last game I abandoned I played Brazil: I built 3 times more wonders than my nearest rival (Dido); If my religion was not the biggest, it certainly was a very close 2nd and growing fast: More than half the city states were my allies; And I never take a city states (only liberate them) or demand tribute from them. Meanwhile my rivals annexed a few city states and always had a sea of military units at their disposal when doing battle with me. So if you can tell me what Im missing please share. I'd be most grateful because I hate playing the vanilla game cause the AI is far too weak to be enjoyable.

Without knowing mod lists, I can’t offer any commentary on these issues. I will say that the community on civ fanatics is very active and none of the issues you mentioned have ever been noted as bugs or concerns. I can only think that this is an issue with mod conflicts.
imspartacus2 4 May, 2019 @ 4:34pm
Thanks Gazebo, I use
Civ V with all DLcs

>The complete Community Patch suite V.89 (I can list all the components of this if you think there may be an issue)
> Colonist Legacies - Cuba v.1
>Info Addict - (v.22)
>JFD's Soviet Union Lenin (v.3)
>JFD's Soviet Union Stalin (v.13)
>R.E.D Modpack v.27
>Really Advanced Setup (v.15)
>Units Starting Scout (v.i)

With the really advanced setup I tick 3 boxes (1) world domination as the only victory condition
(2) No nuclear war and (3) allow research agreements

@imspartacus2: i tested the mod very very much with the actual version now and my final conclusion, ALL of my problems are gone. The sad story, i dont know why.

The massiv grafic errors that occured often, when an ai declared war are gone. The cav prob is gone too. Some things where just written differently and misunderstood.

Maybe steam made an autopatch ??? Or there are no probs with russia civ, that i used in my last 3 games ???

imspartacus2 10 Jun, 2019 @ 1:41am
Is this the recent update released in late May? Id just hate to go through a game again and find myself experiencing the same problems in the late game. Remember although we had some similar problems B4 I also had other problems you didn't have. Its those other problems that concern me
g_e_r_y 30 Jun, 2019 @ 6:28am
With Siam, on immortal, enemy battleships have this strange "bonus v.s. domain" again. Its between 66 - and 100 % offense bonus which makes the game unplayable. AI ships kill everything and even my elite artillery makes only 7 dmg. I have NO other mods then this patch, and i have a screenshot that PROOVES my claims.
