How can I be sure these files are safe? Does Steam curate them?

I know this is old BUT, for anyone thats wants to know the only way a virus can get in your pc is with a .EXE file and you can't upload ANY files with .EXE files in it, so all workshop are safe.

Simply untrue; .scr, .vbs, and many other files all have capabilities to execute scripts from an attacker, just like an executable. OP -- although I'd advise caution while downloading anything, mods can't infect you.
