Honestly, PvP is always better; in my opinion. PvE will get boring after a while, since the only things you fight are zombies; so all there really is in PvE is surviving.
In PvP, you can find a server that's labeled friendly, so there is no Kill on Sight allowed. Plus, it's also fun to just generally mess around your friends; having little planned fights; or raids. That isn't possible in PvE.
