I have it near some oil producing dinos, and it has been working fine, I have two and they are both underwater.

ok... I guess my next question should be... what dino's produce oil? didn't realize there were dino's that made oil, thanks for the info mate... and also to save on having to ask another question later.. are these tamed or wild dino's?

http://ark.gamepedia.com/Dung_Beetle
The Dung Beetle can convert feces placed in its inventory into Fertilizer and Oil. 'Wandering' must be enabled for conversion to occur

http://ark.gamepedia.com/Tusoteuthis
Tusoteuthis will generate Oil (Tusoteuthis Oil) passively in its inventory over time.

Oil Supply - The Basilosaurus stores up to 20 oil
