Idea for a cosmetic sub-mod for 1984
Firstly, thanks Bees for my favorite paradox mod... well, 2nd favorite (cause Warhammer owns me).... but that;s still saying alot.

playing the 1984 mod though, only one thing bugged me.. it's waaaay too pretty.

so I started playing around in Photoshop with the map and some textures and stuff.... with the gial in mind of making the game map look more like something you would find on an Inner Party members strategy desk, or a board game.. still working on that, but just make the world less pretty with blackened city and scorched Earth where the nukes fell.

and also, not touching any game play files, just cosmetic stuff.

and I quickly did a re-paint of the units soldiers, only 4 so far, Russia, Ashland, Airstrip and Japan, (and I've not painted their normal maps yet, cause I'm waiting for some feedback from yall)

here are some screens, ... but they do not do it justice really.

first one is Oceania/Airstrip one, just a quick re=paint... I messed up it's specular highlights so it's super shiney right now.. gonna fix that

Here is Japan, I'm kinda really liking this one. I wanted to go all out and give every soldier a gas-mask and what-not and mostly look totalitarian.

the last one is Ashland, but hard to make out any details.

I didnt want all the factions to look exactly alike, but they kinda do, seeing as they all have helmets and gasmasks and wear black.

If anyone wants to take a look, here's the dropbox link to the unit files, Im updating it as I go, hoping to spend the whole weekend on it. ... i'm allowed to post a dropbox link, right? I'll post it right below, in case it needs to get deleted.

but I'm hoping I can get the mod creator's attention and maybe include some lore-friendly-ish art into his excellent mod... seriouslly I'd be playing Warhammer TW and not HOI4 right now, if not for this mod.

oh, and any artist-types who would like to join in in making an optional cosmetic sub-mod for 1984 just send me a friend request thingy.

it's not in "mod" format.. I forgot how to make a mod file..... so I've just been throwing these into the 1984 mod, it doesnt over write anything

Very intresting

Spent today playing around with the map, with the idea of making look less "realistic" and more like a metallic decorative table-top map... something you might find surrounded by generals on a nice desk. or soemting. I wanted to try and make it look more like a table-top boardgame map. just an idea, playing around to see if it works.

brought a good book to read before work on Saturday, it was a collection of essays on nuclear war put together by Carl Sagan called "The Long Darkness" really good stuff, becasue I was thinking that maybe the world would look more grim with a nice nuclear winter.

so, I used the "both sides in a short thermonuclear war use 10,000 megatons on 1600 targets across the globe, mostly in the Northern Hemisphere" case model Carl put together.

so it doesn't change any gameplay... but I wanted to de-nude the Earth of lots of its forests, make it darker, dirtier and more full of war and craters.

I did find the files to play with the duration and severety of weather, but I decided not to play around with them or do anything that might effect game balance..

my home town, I made sure to nuke it well.

the mountains are supposed to be "stylized" and not representative or anythng. the gameengine knows where the mountains are, any good general should know too.

hard edges, I was going for something like that Soviet futurist deconstructionist art movemnt, what ever they called it.

below is the Vanilla game heightmap and normals, in my opinion, you just cnt really tell from the map what are high regions and what are low-lands. which is what I's like to try out a more stylized map.

still just testing out how the textures work. I want to decrease all the diversity on the map, very much Nuclear Winter in the North and burnt out cites and warzones and bombed out cities, fewer forests, the Southern Hemisphere has much fewer changes than in the North where most of the nuclear stuff happened.

I had a wierd glith, where the map was super-specular. took me a while to figure out how to solve that... turns out I was accidently erasing the atlas files alpha channels.

That looks quite nice the post-apocalypse board game feel does make it feel diffrent stylisticly

to get the "nuked out" areas. I took that very nice "Earth at night wth City Lights" image, just selected all the "yellowy" bits in photoshop. Turned that into an image-mask, and used that to colour in all the bombed out areas... so the cratering would be, you know, where the major cities are.

London was spared being nuked, for some reason in the book.

the HOI4 map is pretty heavily distorted, so ... Moscow's bomb damage is way way off-set and needs to be fixed, lots of little adjustments like that.(actually I should feel pretty good about my Geo-Politiks, since I was only off my 40 miles or so with Moscow)

Also, not sure about the craters... maybe just blackened-Earth would look better?

and here is Atlanta, with the vanilla heightmap and normals.
