Good areas to build in.
Making this real quick so the people can pool the knowledge of good areas. The area I build in is by Whiterun, It's by the Watchtower ( The one where your first dragon is USUALLY killed). You have to go between the tower and the farm and there will be a fallen tree, This is a good area to build in except for the fallen tree taking up room, Which you can fixed by placing the guard barracks over it.

i like to build near dragon's bridge(closer to markarth than solitude) mainly because it has a nice view and it is partially flat

Half way between Moss Mother Cavern & Half Moon Mill is pretty good. it's also really interesting to build one on top of a bandit camp, Knifepoint ridge is cramped, but pretty good. allows your townspeople and etc to have places to sit down, things to interact with, etc.
I do not suggest halted stream camp. tried a few times, too weird.

Another one; I grabbed the "Heartwood" mod, and just installed the town; if you put your well at the crossroads just south of the Mill, it works really great, lots of flat spots.

With "Warzones" and "war against the Thalmor" it pretty much rocks; no reason to have random raids enabled.

I still wish I could buy plans for flipping outdoor benches and chairs, though.

I personally think Gjukar's monument is a decent spot.

really? I like the ground between Gjukar's and Roriksteam, but right around the monument it looks too uneven.

Well, If you place the well just right, you can set up posts right in front of the road, and back behind it as well. It makes a great spot to put the buildings in since you can put them in the rock

I cleared out Fort Dunstad of its original bandits and thought it was a great spot that would have extra free guards and preexisting walls. Sadly I quickly ran out of room inside the walls, and with the game set on Expert difficulty the free Stormcloaks were no match for even the easiest of raids.

For war with the thalmor, its perfect, perhaps build towers and a wall and then you can face them off, if they patrol near you.

In between Half moon mill and Moss Mother Cavern is perfect as well because you can act like its a imperial outpost protecting the road.

Although I recommend disabling most of the trees, stumps, and rocks for more room.
