[TUTORIAL] Custom Skins for Garry's Mod
DISCLAIMER: Some patience is required and please read it carefully and try everything you possibly can before asking questions, unless you have found I have made a mistake, Thanks! :Big_Heart:

Go through the tutorial at your own pace, it is only larger because I am trying to aim at nearly all skill levels here

Programs Required
WinRAR[www.rarlab.com] OR any other unarchiving tool
This is used to extract the zip folder that holds the templates

GIMP[www.gimp.org] OR any other photo editing software
I will be using GIMP in this tutorial to help anyone who can't afford photoshop or just does not have it. Please feel free to followe along in photoshop or any other program.

VTFEdit[nemesis.thewavelength.net]
This is needed to convert pngs, tgas or jpgs to the texture format that the source engine reads.

To Start
Download the template pack here Dropbox (Template Pack)[www.dropbox.com]
Create a folder on your desktop and extract the contents of the zip into it.

Now to make things easier use this photo as a reference guide to which model you wish to edit

Image Below May Not Show Up As True Image, Click On It!
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=914784573
Once chosen a model find the appropriate .tga file and open it in gimp
At the end of every file is _custom1, if you would like to edit the second custom skin replace the one to a 2.
Yes you can save two different custom skins

Now to the fun part! :steamhappy:
Edit what ever disc, floppy drive or box you want in the program using the template, the template is labeled by the creator and should be self explanatory also use a tutorial if you do not know how to use gimp or photoshop, it is not hard just copy paste images of the game, dvd etc you want from google.

Here is my result
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=914804012

Now save this as a tga or png

Now to the boring part!
Open up VTFEdit click file and click import, find your file and double click on it.
You should see it magically appear in the preview. OK leave vtfedit open it is time to create the folder to replace the texture.

Navigate to your "x:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Garry's Mod\garrysmod\addons\"
or where ever your gmod is located.
A lot of folder creation inbound
Once in here create a new folder named "Disc_data_storage_texture_replacement" or anything you would like. Now inside that folder create a subfolder called materials, inside that create another subfolder named unconid inside that create a folder named pc_models then another named data_storage then last folder named custom.

The root directory should be

\addons\Disc_data_storage_texture_replacement\materials\models\unconid\pc_models\data_storage\custom
If this is not done this way it will not work!

This location is where all custom textures will be saved now

Go back to VTFEdit and click save as and navigate to the last folder you just created and make sure the filename is the same as the .tga template file you opened now only this time it ends in .vtf save it

Mine looks like \addons\Disc_data_storage_texture_replacement\materials\models\unconid\pc_models\data_storage\custom\jewel_case_label_custom_1.vtf
"jewel_case_label_custom_1".vtf Change this to whatever the template filename was that you opened

If wanting to use the second skin slot type _custom_2 instead of 1

No qoutes and keep the .vtf

Time to try it in game open up gmod and spawn the model that you edited the texture for.
Hold C to open the context menu in sandbox and click on skin 4 or 5
Skin 4 relates to _custom_1 and skin 5 is _custom_2

If Done Correctly This is the Result!

Feel free to ask questions if you have gone through the tutorial completely before asking for help :steamhappy:

I am not sure what you mean this is not a mod to change skins in realtime in gmod, and this tutorial is not either. This is the only current way of adding your own skins to models that allow the texture groups.

If you need further information go here

For the jewelcase (The Half-Life game case in the picture) I know how to replace the texture (what I'm doing is trying to make some Dreamcast games) what I do not know how to do is how to change the black bar to white.

I tried inverting the colours of jewel_case_base.vtf or making the black parts of jewel_case_label.vtf white but I seem to be missing something in changing the black strip of plastic white.

So I had a look at the UVs and the part you got to change is up on the top left of the .vtf.

Hmm I attempted to change it as well I can't seem to.

I already tried that.Going as far as making all the black areas on the template white and such.

I even tried inverting the colours on jewel_case_base.vtf but that didn't make any changes.

It might be sharing uv space with another texture file, I can have another look later.

Thanks. I am very close to finishing my map and just needs some finishing touches.
I used to have these but couldn't get them translucent.

Yeah transparency in source engine is cancer. I tried making a T Virus Vial for l4d2 but any transparent texture looked horrible.

I've yet to give modelling a proper go but it's something I'd like to do.
Such as more light guns for GMod. Such as the Virtua Gun. Would also like to make aTF2 bombcart thats this giant glass pill filled with chemicals.

On the subject, any answers on how to change the colour of the black bar?

None currently but might have a look tomorrow, I used to do L4D2 mods but lost interest. I should probably get back into it.

I mostly do maps for TF2maps.net. I put a Dreamcast in one of the spawnrooms and would like to put Dreamcast games in it. I got the game covers done, just that black strip of plastic alone I ca't recolour.
