Fatal Error
Hi, my friend has his game crashing with this message:
“Fatal error”

He has already done a file integrity check, a full reinstallation and even deleted the “UE4PrereqSetup_x64.exe” file.

Unfortunately, the problem still persists. What can we do next, please?

When does it crash? Immediately on starting or after playing for a bit?

It crashed a lot, but that seems to be fixed for now, thanks. He solved it by making sure Steam and Windows are compatible (right click on Steam>properties>compatibility>click on our Windows).

If it happens again in your next session, I'll mention it again here. Thanks for your help, happy holidays!

I have also been suddenly getting fatal errors and game crashes today, where I've had none for over 60 hours. I noticed there was a huge spike on ethernet, cpu and memory around the same time. Wondering if it's steam cloud save related or something similar.

This comes from Kayjun, the person who was able to propose a solution and who solved my friend's problem (with the Fatal Error message).

Here's the protocol he proposed:

"Hey everyone;

My friend was having issues with getting the game to run post co-op update. He kept receiving "Fatal error" with a variety of different error codes. Then only way we found we could make the game work, after trying a lot of different fix attempts, was to;

1) Close Steam via Task Manager
2) Right Click on the Steam Desktop Icon
3) Properties
4) Compatibility
5) Check, "Run this program in compatibility mode for, and select Windows 8 if not already selected
6) Apply and OK
7) Restart PC
8) Run Steam as normal via desktop icon (the administrator window should pop up, select yes)
9) If Steams prompts you saying some features may be disabled due to compatibility mode, disregard by checking the box to not display the warning again
10) Run the game as normal

We found this to be successful in fixing the consistent fatal error crashes.

One thing to note, If you do run into issues because of the compatibility mode, you could always select specifically to run the games .exe file as admin, but I haven't tested this quite yet and cant confirm it would fix my friends issue.

All the best and I hope this was helpful to someone!

Kayjun"

Hope this helps, happy new year by the way!

Don't do that, we noticed it causes issues when loading saves.

Thanks for the step by step description though, might help someone else, thought it seems that the causes tend to differ greatly from person to person.

With pleasure, yes I was aware that his problem supposed a different assistance but in doubt I found judicious to propose him the whole solution, which proved functional for my friend.
