It's also possible you had a faulty card to begin with, or a faulty firmware on the card.
My Asrock 6800 OC edition suffered from crashes that rebooted the PC, the vBIOS on it was flawed. An update from the GPU manufacturer's website fixed the issue.
If it's a hardware issue then there's a 99.999% chance it wasn't the game, your card or whatever parts in your system that are causing this were probably dying or had problems for a long time before this happened. If the game was actually wrecking video cards I'm pretty sure we would have seen a lot of posts about it by now and we haven't.
