Sacred Gold series is another recommend I hear from some who enjoyed Torchlight.
Chronicon is 2d pixel art and the combat feels lacking yet everything else especially the ability to truly filter items and having a true post-game are an upside.
I hear of the 2d game Slormancer and it seems that some players like it. Seems to have the same upsides and downsides that most 2d entries in this genre have.

Sacred Gold 2 is a huge step up from Sacred Gold 1. Much more content, huge map, really nice graphics, but you might find it a bit too much. However, you don't need to do every single side-quest on either of the Sacred Gold games.

I also like Two Worlds: Epic Edition, but it's not as popular as the Sacred Gold games.

Some people also enjoy the FATE series of games, which shares at least one developer with the Torchlight games, although it's an even simpler game, and strictly dungeon diving, like Torchlight 1 is.

Also, when you come back to this game, you should really try adding the TL2-ACE mod. It adds 2 new Acts to Torchlight 2 and a lot of new dungeons and new classes. The developers of the mod are still actively adding to it. They love to get feedback from the players and are very helpful and responsive to suggestions.

check out the whole series.
From looking at the forum for the game for a number of years, it seems there are a number of people that do have to download the Community Patch or some other mod to avoid problems with the game. However, I have not had any issues with the game that I can recall. Every time I play it, it all works fine with no mods or patches. I did limit the fps for the game to 30, since that works to solve a lot of issues with certain older games.
Re: Two Worlds Epic Edition
It's a very large and beautiful open world game that has some choices-matter stuff in it, but none of the choices really affect your ability to navigate to the ending. Yes, you gather loot to equip yourself, like on most ARPGs.
There is also some potion crafting, but it's optional. I think the most striking difference with this particular game is that it is up to you to mold your character into the type of "class" you want him to be. If you want a sorcerer, then you equip him with robes and a staff. If you want a melee fellow, then you equip heavier gear and weapons. Or you can choose an archer, or do a mixture of some sort. You'll actually want to swap weapons for certain enemies. You can also lay mines and traps to catch or damage/kill enemies.
The horses are fun to ride, but they didn't finish the programming for fighting while riding a horse, so don't bother trying to do that. They are best used for storage. Park some near a portal and store all your stuff on them, just like you would a stash chest.
I love TL2, 100's of hours in it even before steam messed the game up. (if you know you know) I would 100% say for chill and utter fun come join the gang on LE.
Thanks.
I've been having a lot of fun that way with the new spiritborn class. Then you just slowly learn new things over time but initially just get to level 60 and hack away.
