Very addicting cozy game

Cozy Keep is a pretty decent, albeit a little basic, shop sim game that does a good job of avoiding some of the common issues and mistakes I commonly see in this genre.

Let's get the bad out of the way.

There are some odd stutters and frame drops while building and demolishing things, not a deal breaker but I always held my breathe wondering if the game is about to crash. Luckily it never did though.

Hopefully early access will flesh this out, but I wish the game had a little more meat on the bones. While I do like the overall package, some parts felt a little shallow, even making some aspects of the game a little pointless. I never really went all out with raising animals and using automation for them because there wasn't much need to. In fact, I never did more than one animal area for sheep. Same went with crop planting. By the time I had about half the first(of many) crop growing areas filled up, I had basically already completed the game and thus made it kind of a waste of my time. This was also fed by the fact that I had already started making tons of jewelry, which are the highest selling items, and that can pretty much finish off the game for you. So it basically makes all the planting and animal farming kind of pointless/useless.

It would be nice to see a shop/building expansion that also included some kind of bar/restaurant mechanic. This would not only add much needed space in the shop but would give a lot more purpose to planting and farming. Could even incorporate the bar/restaurant aspect into the story line, Maybe once you get your family out of debt they could join you to run this new part of the business and also use it to build up the community somehow against the tyrannical king. You could be feeding and arming them against the powers that be! Start training them on the combat training field you rebuilt even!

QOL wise there are a few small things that are missing. Like you can craft things directly from storage but you can't build things using materials in storage. Some of the more common building tools like grids, free form building for decorations instead of pre-selected spots, etc.

Besides that the game is very solid. It does a nice job of adding elements of exploration and combat to help mix up the gameplay. Some of these shop sim games have nothing more than just the shop part of it, which can get really old really quick. It's so much more satisfying when you have ways to harvest, build, grow, and mine your own materials for the products you make and sell. That's exactly what this game does.

You have a map with areas you can explore. Secrets you can find. A Mine you can explore with combat. A full farming system that even includes some automation upgrades, and more. So Cozy Keep doesn't make the common mistake of not giving the player much to do, and for that this puts it high on the tier list of shop sim games.

Other games I've played that do add other game mechanics (besides just the shop) usually make the mistake of not balancing the game in a way where you can go exploring when you feel like it and not worry about the shop. Though I do wish you could run the store even if you aren't there, you never feel like your progress is being halted for it either. You can build up some cash and take a few days to go explore and hit the mine without feeling like you might be screwed because the shop isn't currently running.

It isn't easy finding a way to balance objectives and goals into this kind of game that have actual weight/purpose to them, and still allow the player the freedom to engage with and do as they see fit. So it's a nice treat to see a game that does exactly that, and I commend this dev for pulling it off.

What a great foundation this game has, if it were to get just a little more substance and depth, this could be one of the best shop sim games out there. However, even if it doesn't get all that much more substance added, it's still a fun game to play now and worth the cost of admission. So I can easily recommend it!

I have been having so much fun with Cozy Keep! There is so much to do. Not only do you get to run and decorate your shop, you get to also craft, farm, ranch, fish, and explore a mine filled with enemies and resources.

First, don't let the combat scare you away. It's not difficult, at all. And, it's not punishing if you die. The goblin king has kicked my butt many times and when I fall, I am transported back to the shop. My backpack full of items appears OUTSIDE of the mine. So, yeah. I have to run back to the mine to pick up my stuff, but it's just to the entrance. I don't have to make my way back to the exact spot where I fell, and I don't lose anything by dying. (To be honest... if I'm feeling lazy, I use the death mechanic as a teleport out.)

You do have a debt to pay, but you are given a generous amount of time at each step to pay it off. In fact, I realized that I needed to slow down. I was so anxious to pay it off that I was doing so without using the full allotment of time given between due dates... and that actually hurt me. Each time you pay, the amount goes up. So, use the time you are given! Take a deep breath, spend some time gathering resources, and setting up your shop. Pick a day to farm and do that. Pick another day to craft and do that. Don't feel like you have to do everything all at once.

Speaking of the shop, your customers will wander up and ask for specific things. But, as far as I can tell, turning them away doesn't truly hurt your shop rating. Unless it is something simple and easy ("I want an apple. Please restock the fish"), then I tell them I don't have it. It's too stressful to try and run downstairs and craft whatever they want, on the spot. But, as I said, it doesn't hurt you to do so! I'm sitting at almost 4 stars, now, and I turn people away all the time.

I have been having a blast growing food and cooking. My shop is pretty much specialized in selling cooked food. Though, I do have a corner for things I loot in the mine. But, you can specialize however you like! Want to be an armory? Craft a bunch of gear and sell it. You can make rings, bracelets, and necklaces and be a jeweler. You can fill the shop with fish, fish oil, and bait to be a fishing shop. Do whatever you like!

Cozy Keep was well worth the purchase, for me!
