Game unplayable after 1.4 patch?
I consider myself a good player - in my last game I reached turn 300+ on Nightmare difficulty, before I just gave up and played other games.
I came back to AtG after patch 1.4 went live, but the new "You're near my border" mechanic is broken. All the games are the same:
Start, meet nearest civilization (Romans most of the time), "You're near my border", "You're still near my border, I'm gonna destroy you", war, death.
Around turn 25-30 you're lucky if you have Archer and they attack you with Riders or Roman Legions.
If you're sandwiched between Roman Empire and sea/other barbarians, or just two barb tribes, you have nowhere to go and you can just start a new game.
I've wasted several hours so far playing the first 30 turns of the game and I'm sick of it.

Just move away from the romans. They will wipe out everyone else then sweep in for easy cash camping

Romans don’t attack civilians so you can launch a gather and wood collector and so forth before leaving

The diplomacy patch ruined what little diplomacy there was in this game

it used to be that the AI was non-existant. Now they are active, but are still ♥♥♥♥, so the only thing they ever do is ♥♥♥♥♥ at you and then declare war. And as you said, when you are just getting to archers/spearmen, how are you supposed to fight a 100+power legionary army.

I had hope for this game, but it continues to be a dumpster fire

I'm afraid I agree. The constant whining about border encroachment makes the game much more annoying. Shut up about your borders, all I'm trying to do is scout the area so I can move AWAY from your whiny ass. I had Rome complain to me that I was too close to their borders when I was destroying a bandit camp that had pillaged their fort and they did nothing about it. Dude, you should be thanking me.

Not possible, when you start in the middle of continent between Romans and Slavs. Or between Romans and sea.
Also I know, I could just move away, but on Nightmare difficulty, there's not much room for roaming around, not gathering, hoping to find some empty piece of land (kudos for the realism though).

Don't worry about the border warnings. They will attack you regardless. They will come attack and pillage your buildings even if you're supposed to be allied. Diplomacy is completely broken in this patch.
