NOTE: This will be a comparison of the original PS1 version of the game, since I never personally played the handheld version.

Today I will review the game Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined. This is a remake of a game that first appeared on ps1, then on handheld, and finally, on pc. This version has several things removed from the game, but also has added many quality of life things to make the game more easier and functional. Due to new laws in Japan about showing gambling in games and it is now considered illegal, some things were changed from the original version of the game, including gambling mechanics. The other things removed from the game were a island stuck in a time loop that featured charisma contests in present day, a island that featured a present day casino, a monster hunting island where you could recruit monsters, and the immigrant town to make your own town. Out of all these things, personally i find the changes not that bad, except the immigrant town island where players could make their own towns. I suggested on the forums if they released it as a dlc, i probably buy it.

Many quality of life changes have been made. For example, in the original one, you ran into monster randomly. In this version, monsters can be hit and seen on the maps. Some things now appear as shortcuts which can be changed in the settings menu for shortcuts. Like whistle, which was originally a skill you needed to cast. Now, you just need to press a button on a controller and it is done.

This version did add one new thing, but since i do not wish to spoil it, i will not personally talk about it. There are also shortened dungeons, and less islands in this version. This is to due to the new Japan anti gambling law, which also effects video games. Anyways, here is my pros and cons list:



PROS:

- A classic game with remake with quality of life updates.
- A main line Dragon Quest game on steam.
- Some changes that improve the game including shortcuts to make doing some things faster.
- Lucky Panel game that changed the gambling mechanics in the game. This mini game is a match 2 picture game.
- Post games activities for players to do other things in the game.
- This game works with controllers. I used a Nintendo Switch 1 Zen Neo controller.
- Works on windows 11 OS version 25h2.


CONS:

- My biggest gripe is that they removed the immigrant town. The reason they removed it is because of more strict laws against gambling showing in games. In the original one, the immigrant town have 5 different forms. One of them was the casino town. They also removed the monster recruiting town, and the time loop town. Not everyone is happy with these changes. Most personally do not bother me, except removal of immigrant town.

- The beginning of the game was much longer on previous versions. This version has been streamlined to make gameplay faster. Also, many dungeons are now much shorter than they used to be. Again, not everyone is happy with these new changes.


Do I recommend this game? Yes, I do. Although I am personally not happy with them removing the Immigrant Town island mechanic from the game, the game is still fun for what it is. It will take you some time to fully beat it, but the game has been made easier from original versions. Some people consider this bad because the changes made to make the game easier are shorter dungeons and such. I do not mind them personally, except for the removal of the Immigrant Town. I am actually happy pc and steam got more mainline Dragon Quest games. The more they put on here, the better. It also has video game preservation, even if it is not in the original version it was released.
