I finished the game on Switch 2, and this remake is a complete misfire.

Nearly every change makes the experience worse. The story has been heavily rewritten to the point where all edge and personality are gone. No tension, no bite, no risk allowed. Characters are sanitized, conflicts are softened, and everyone feels unnaturally agreeable. On top of that, several characters have been fundamentally rewritten in ways that no longer resemble their original roles. Lala, who was once a dancer with a clear narrative purpose, has been turned into an all-purpose “girlboss” warrior archetype, which feels forced and completely out of place.

The original charm is gone. Difficulty has been trivialized to the point of absurdity: MP recovery items are everywhere (I finished the game with over 80 unused Magic Waters), and save statues that fully restore HP/MP appear every few minutes. There is no resource management, no sense of progression left.

Large parts of the original world-building have also been removed. Entire systems and locations from casinos, immigration mechanics, and over 20 churches—are gone, In their place are new scenes clearly written to check boxes rather than serve the story, including long, awkward dialogue sequences that add nothing to gameplay or narrative flow.

Between the heavy censorship, poor localization, unnecessary rewrites, and the complete loss of challenge and identity, this remake barely resembles the original game. If you cared about the tone, mechanics, or world of the original release, avoid this version entirely.

Is this "woke" in the room with us right now?
I think that...

The creator and director of the Dragon Quest series, Yuji Horii, is alive and active.

If you decide to change the story and some other serious things to improve it,

I highly doubt the game won't be worthwhile.

well , that's the trend of the modern gaming lol. and since the game desperately promoting the modernizing term for the new player base. this is actually not even a surprise to me.

The censorship of 2026 is not the same as it was during the PlayStation 1 era.

Back then, there was more freedom to do all sorts of things.

But now, censorship laws apply to video games, movies, TV series, and so on.
But that doesn't mean we should dismiss the video game; it's definitely good.

For example

and without even including many languages...

but speaking generally, the saga is losing its essence

Ehh I don't really think this qualifies as a woke game but the signs of "modernization" are very clear for better or worse, what with random ass censorship, dumbing down of puzzles, removal of some content and with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ gambling laws in place which forced them to remove the casino too. It also seemed that they are trying to get more new players on board but unfortunately those who enjoyed the PS1 or even the 3DS version would probably be disappointed.

yeah , they dropped the ball really hard. you get tons of accessibility to make the game easier but not a meaningful adjustment to make game challenging in a good way lol. this game is basically anti-hard core gamer or anti-old time fans.

I'm sure there's plenty of straight-white man pandering garbage out there for you to consume instead if the thought of a game appealing to women by humanizing them or, leGASP!, adding a black or LGBT character to the game is that much of a dealbreaker for you.

You do realize there's a dialogue in the original game (via party chat) where Aishe\Aira ♥♥♥♥♥ on people who would complain about one old guy who turned into a bunny girl by the end of the game?
Aira: Don't judge him. Why does it matter if he likes to wear women's clothes? It's harmless and it's none of our business. The only perverts are the ones who obssessively fixate on something so trivial.

Even got those screenshots for you https://imgur.com/a/oJynOoa

What she says should also apply to people crying about her current outfit. Who cares she has shorts which you won't see much anyway since she always had a piece of cloth covering her behind?

So yeah, the old game was "woke" You'd know that if you actually played it instead ot playing a tourist.
