I think I bought DiRT Rally pretty close to release and it had a full cockpit. But it was far closer to a sim than their other products.
The reason this caught me off guard is I ran across a blog post from 2014 by codemasters talking about how they'd listened to the players and were bringing back the ability to turn off driver assists and bring back the cockpit view. I guess they were about 60% successful.
On a side note if you haven't played Flatout 2 or Ultimate Carnage it does what DiRT Showdown tried to, but so much better.
For the release, of course, all features and locations were included that are known from the game today. It could also be that I'm wrong, in any case Codemasters advertised at the time with the feature that a real cockpit perspective is now included again.
But this is actually about Grid Autosport. :) At Codemasters they didn't want to make the huge effort for the 1% of players (at least according to Codemasters' statement at the time) who actually play from the cockpit perspective, especially since Grid Autosport was only a kind of Grid 2.5 anyway. :)
