In a road to redemption, how much can one invest in themselves and still remember their creed?

Assassin’s Creed Unity was initially released in 2014, and it’s a third-person action, stealth, and parkour game, marking a new era of Assassin’s Creed games. With a bigger focus on movement, stealth, and customization, this game also introduced a multiplayer system with in-game missions that provide equipment and currency.

Set in France in the late 18th century during the tumultuous time of the revolution where you control Arno Dorian. On the “modern” segment of the game, you only receive cutscenes, without the exploration present in previous games.

In a plot of ancient rivalry between the Assassins and the Templars, revolution, conspiracies, and mysteries, this time the player has more freedom to explore the open map, take part in multiplayer missions, investigate murders, solve riddles, and the ever-present staple of the series, the synchronization in high places.

Similar in some ways to the first game, during some missions you can explore, if a bit more in-depth, opportunities and collectable items on important segments of the story. Also present are a number of collectables items that unlock new equipment, and in a first for the series, you can customize not only your weapons, but also your whole gear.

When it was initially released, the game had several flaws, but in the current version those were corrected, creating a very fluid experience.

Although I highly enjoy the game, especially the story, there are some points that can be considered detrimental to the enjoyment of it, considering the completionist side. There are specific equipment that can only be unlocked through repeated playthrough of multiplayer missions. That on itself wouldn’t be as bad, but finding other players playing said missions can take some time, but saying that, there is the option to play these missions alone.

With the progression of the series, following the increased technology available at the time of release, not only were graphics improved, but the movement and combat were refined. While running and exploring, the player has greater control over the movement of Arno, and in combat, the timing and dodging became more important, and more involved than the one present in previous games.

The game can be played both with mouse and keyboard, and controller, but considering the fast action I prefer the controller option. In game there are multiple graphical options along with the option of different spoken languages and subtitles.

Overall, the story fits nicely with the universe created by the earlier games of the series and the improvements of graphics and movement in game create a fast dynamic experience. With customization, there are, if a bit limited, options to play either more action or stealth oriented. For these reasons, I highly recommend this game.

Is it a good game?
In my opinion yes, absolutely. Assassin’s Creed Unity still shines in several areas. The parkour system is genuinely fun and fluid, the crowd system is unique and impressive even by today’s standards, and the story paired with the atmosphere of Paris is fantastic. The city feels alive and immersive. That said, the combat is easily the weakest part, it can feel clunky and unresponsive at times, which holds the experience back.

Now for the technical side.
If you don’t have the time or patience to deal with frequent crashes, I would honestly avoid this game like the plague. In my case, the game crashed constantly, most often when launching the game and pressing Continue to load my save. I regularly had to restart the game multiple times just to get my save to load.

Performance-wise, there are more issues. Playing above 120 FPS causes textures to fail to load correctly, so I ended up locking my FPS to 60 just to avoid further problems. I’m on Windows 11 (24H2), and while I can’t say whether Windows 10 users have a smoother experience, my game crashed a lot. I’m not sure if this is AMD-specific, but if you don’t lock your CPU cores in Task Manager and the game crashes, your entire PC can completely freeze.

Unity is a great game buried under serious technical issues. When it works, it’s an incredible experience... but getting it to work consistently can be infuriating.
