To preface, at current point that I'm writing this review the English translation have jarring issues. There are untranslated and repeated lines even on important scenes. However the reason I do not recommend this is primarily due to the content itself.

Weeping Swan is a sequel to Hungry Lamb and a visual novel depicting tragic romance tale that takes place during Yangzhou Massacre. Tragic romance is a genre I'm infatuated with. I also owned every game by the same developer and finished Zang Hua and Hungry Lamb. I have fond memories of their ending. Unfortunately, the same could not be said of this work as I ended up getting disappointed by the end.

I will go through the positives and negatives through following points, which will contain huge spoilers for certain points:

+ Art and music are great. They're pleasant to experience and feel like they truly bring you through traditional China. I also adore the ending song.
+ If you liked the Hungry Lamb main casts you will find them receiving their well-deserved resolution here.
+ There's voice acting for everyone including the main character and they are of high quality making the experience more immersive.
+ It isn't entirely depressing but rather humorous when needs be.
+ The romantic moment during the flashback scenes is warm, I love the banters
+ Bold and interesting premise of the main heroines, both of whom are courtesans with respective inner complexes while the main character is a scholar with bright future.

- The abundance of pointless bad endings that serve nothing. You make a wrong choice, usually deliberately for achievement lol, and the main character dies, but there is no new information gained. It isn't new yes, Zerocreation Games have history of doing this in their previous works, which is why I wouldn't have been so irritated by this if it weren't for the fact that
- True endings provide zero catharsis. There are two true ends, both of which ended tragically for the main casts. While the main draw of Weeping Swan is tragic romance, at the same time this is a visual novel with multiple endings. On one true end Zhiyou never moved on, living with the ghost, or perhaps illusion of Lingyang to old age while on the other he lives wallowing in regret for the rest of his life reminiscing over Pianpian. These ARE NOT what I would call a "TRUE END" in regards to a visual novel, these are all bona fides BAD END. Hungry Lamb has a tragic true end as well where Liang died together with Sui, however as the final moment approached they were truly honest to each other, it was cathartic as they still achieved something, be it killing the corrupted politician or spending the last moment together. In Weeping Swan you have none of that. In fact why isn't there a TRUE END choice popup of Zhiyou stopping Pianpian from leaving during the last night they met? That was such a perfect moment to insert one. The ending where Zhiyou ended up with Qionghua somehow has the basis of one, as he at least was spending his life away with someone else, which would've been solid if they actually raised a family.
- Most of the normal endings just pit the main character at the setting or situation where he meets historical figure. The nature of the implementation is the very definition of shoehorning. There is no significance of those histories to the meat of the story. The integration of real world history in Weeping Swan is rather lazily written.
- Ironically the casts of previous work took up too much screentime. As soon as Liang came into picture, the sense of dread from the beginning was gone.
- There is almost no twist, everything was laid bare and obvious from the get-go despite using the similar storytelling format as Hungry Lamb.
- Everything in regards to how Zhiyou's amnesia and illness was handled screams lazy writing. The memory came back when the information is necessary for the plot to move on and seeing the armies as beasts bears little to no consequence.

All in all, the ending is paramount after all that the main casts had went through. Weeping Swan deserves a free DLC or story update to supplement it.
