Alright. Quarantine Zone: The Last Check is done and dusted. This is a checkpoint simulation game set during a zombie apocalypse. QZTLC is a fun spin on "Papers, Please" style gaming and didn't overstay its welcome over the 16 hours it took me to complete a run with the good ending. You, the unnamed protagonist, are in charge of checking each person trying to come through the checkpoint to confirm whether they are healthy or infected.

To that end, you will be given an ever-expanding collection of tools designed to help you identify signs of infection in the various survivors seeking the safety of a military run outpost. Of course, as is the way with checkpoint simulators, your eyes are your number one tool. Looking over the survivors for telltale signs of infection is paramount. However, the game likes to throw curveballs at you by determining that some signs of infection can also simply be things like a common cold or hepatitis, lol.

Your collection of tools includes the intimate and somewhat cringe portable X-ray to look survivors up and down underneath their clothing; an eye examination tool; a temperature and pulse scanner; and several others besides. Probably the funniest tool is the hammer, which you will use to smack survivors to test their reflexes, lol. And of course, you will be gifted with a pistol at some point. Because on occasion, you just gotta take matters into your own hands.

Once you have listed every anomalous detail you can find, you will look over their chart. Some things are exclusive to infected survivors, making your decision easy. You just send those survivors off to be executed. However, there are times when they sus out your intentions and attack you. Reference the pistol mentioned above. Similarly, there are many symptoms that are pretty normal for people and in no way indicate being infected. Survivors with nothing questionable are sent through to the survivor camp. Everyone else, with symptoms that may or may not indicate infection are sent into quarantine for up to three days for observation.

While in observation, survivors may actually start getting healthier, in which case, you transfer them to the survivor camp. In other instances, they'll turn while in quarantine, killing any other survivors in quarantine with them. So, you really need to stay on top of your daily observation to try to sort out who is who and what is what.

As an added wrinkle, some survivors have symptoms not previously documented. Those survivors you will send to be dissected so we can determine what these new symptoms are. Obviously, the survivor doesn't...ummm...survive this. CaseOh was one such victim in the name of science. Also, one of the cheevos asks you to remove a brain and give it the Dr J/Vince Carter treatment. To that end, there is a basketball hoop in the survivor camp. :)

But wait! that's not all. There are also some base-building elements to this game. You have the overall base rating, which can be improved using points earned by conducting thorough checks on survivors and accomplishing other goals. The higher the base rating, the better you can improve the buildings within. You also earn cash for various activities, and this is how you will spend that, mostly. Which includes the power generator, the quarantine, lab, canteen, tents, medical, guard towers, the checkpoint itself and base defense. The checkpoint upgrades actually give you some help in identifying general symptoms to look for with survivors as they pass through.

And speaking of defense, there is a lite tower defense mode in this game as well, which triggers every few nights as zombies hear the sounds of your base and attempt to swarm it. They're pretty easy and really just serve to remind you that this world is in fact dangerous and that your base is always at risk.

So, what happens if you accidentally (or intentionally) allow an infected into the survivor camp? Well...that's why you improve your guard towers. Hopefully the soldiers can kill the infected before it kills a lot of survivors.

And what actually happens to the survivors? The military gives you a human quota, and every week or so, they will evacuate the survivors into two factions: science and military. There are no civilians in a zombie apocalypse. Presumably, failing to meet these quotas would lead to the bad ending, but that didn't happen in my playthrough. You are more or less told early on though that you would likely be executed. No idea if this actually comes to pass.

And the last thing to mention is that if a survivor turns while in quarantine, you can cage the zombie and ship it out with the evacuation for further study.

There is an okay selection of survivors. You will definitely see the same looking people over and over the longer you play though. And there is also a bit of dialogue. The devs definitely used the opportunity here to add comic relief to what could otherwise have been a pretty dark game, and actually, given some of things survivors say, you will become a stone-cold checkpoint warden pretty quickly, lol. Aaaaannndddd....there is also a lite story here. Which helps to further motivate you. Along with that come daily quests. Which are along the lines of don't confiscate this, do confiscate that, make sure you execute this specific person, etc..

There was a recurring bug however that hopefully gets addressed. On occasion, the game will stop recognizing any prompts that are attached to interacting with survivors, which requires restarting the day you are on. Which is annoying since the game only features an auto-save at the beginning and end of the day (and after a defense sequence). So, if this happens, you will lose all of that day's progress. I had this happen around a half-dozen times.

All in all, QZTLC is a pretty casual game and was good casual sardonic fun. I enjoyed it. I'd say it's worth a look for sure.

I finished it in less than 3 days. It's a really good and fun game. The whole point is inspecting people to see if they're infected, which is cool, although it can feel repetitive after a while. A cool little bonus is that characters from Dead by Daylight and streamers also appear as survivors. I recommend it.

A very cool game — I really liked it. I rarely play simulators, but this one surprised me with its uniqueness and gameplay.
Definitely recommended.
