Xbox 360 controller D-pad not working
Has anyone managed to get their Xbox 360 controller fully working with Steam Link?

I'm using the wireless version (with wireless dongle plugged into Steam Link) and can get it all working except for the D-Pad.

I know a lot of people are having various issues with the Xbox 360 controller, but I couldn't find anything specific to my issue. I'd love to know if anyone else has had this issue and has maybe found a workaround.

I'm pretty impressed that the Xbox wireless controller worked straightaway (well done Valve), but clearly there are some residual driver issues/bugs. I'm hoping this is sorted soon.

UPDATE (13 Dec 2015):

My 360 controller D-pad (with thrid party wireless dongle) is now working as of beta build 412.

This is so frustrating.

I am otherwsie so, so impressed with the Link - but this controller issue is an annoying fly in the ointment.

I really hope Valve is taking careful note of these posts, and finding workarounds soon. If you are listening, thanks in advance Valve.

Does anyone know if wired works? I have yet to try and Xbox One controller connected directly.

Makes playing games like Rogue Legacy and Spelunky easier with a decent d-pad (I have the wireless 360 pad with improved D-pad)

Just installed my steam link and everything is working except for the dpad on my wireless 360 controller. Hope they'll fix this soon. It renders several games unplayable, very annoying.

I'm having this problem as well, link seems to be working great except the 360 wireless controller d-pad is not working at all. I plugged the wireless dongle into my computer directly to confirm the d-pad worked when not running through the steam link box.

I am also using the 360 controller with the wireless dongle and have NOT had any issues with the D-pad or any other controller function. I use it with the dongle plugged directly into the Steam Link, but have also tried it plugged into the host computer with equally good results. It seems to work fine in both the Link menus as well as in-game.

I bought my dongle off Ebay a while back and haven't had any issues, but I made sure that the one I purchased was an official Microsoft product because I had noticed several cheaper knock-offs being sold under the guise of the real deal with identical packaging colors, etc. I'm not saying that off-brand parts are the cause of the issue here necessarily, but just wanted to throw that info out there as a potential cause of compatibility issues seeing as the Link is new hardware and a third-party part may deviate from the original just enough to cause problems in this unforseen circumstance.

For those who bought the official controller and dongle bundled together, this certainly shouldn't be an issue as I for one can attest that it DOES work for some people. Working out why others are having problems if they are indeed using identical parts could prove difficult.

There are a lot of 360 wireless controller dongles around, some by Microsoft and some by third parties. I have one that works so I guess I got lucky. I don't know if Valve is reading these but providing them more information about which specific dongle won't work could be useful.

Yeah some more info from Valve would be useful.

I have the official MS dongle and controller, but I'm having problems with the D-pad not working. I'm thinking it might be a batch issue problem, with some serial numbers OK and others not. I guess at this time, so early in the Link's release, we'll be waiting a while for a fix. But I agree with other posters, this completely renders the Link and most games unplayable right now - such a bummer. :(

Bump for same problem, dongle plugged into the side usb port for what it's worth. Very difficult to play anything that has controls mapped to the d pad without re mapping to a keyboard (if possible) which isn't a great alternative to have to switch controls just to push one button. Tested in shadows of mordor and rebel galaxy.

I was having the same d-pad issue. Was using a third party wireless dongle. Swapped it with the official MS one I was using on my main PC. Working as it should now. Hooking the 3rd party dongle up to my PC, it didn't recognize it right away. You can install the official MS drivers, but it's a bit of a work around and needs to be forced. So I'm guessing different dongles have unique hardware identifiers and the steam link is looking for a specific (official MS) one.

I have a knock off dongle.

When I initially plugged it into the Steam Link my controller would pair, but I had a blinking green ring on the controller. The d-pad did not work.

I installed some fresh batteries in my 360 controller (my old ones were almost dead) and re-paired.

My controller came up as #1 and the D-pad works now.

Try re-pairing your controller.

If that does not work, install your dongle on your PC and verify everything works properly.

After re-pairing mine works both when my dongle is on the PC or Steam Link.

Good luck!

Does anybody know if the after-market / third-party xbox 360 controller dongle works with the steam link?
