Got the exact same issue, can't seem to get this working either.
I am otherwsie so, so impressed with the Link - but this controller issue is an annoying fly in the ointment.
I really hope Valve is taking careful note of these posts, and finding workarounds soon. If you are listening, thanks in advance Valve.
Makes playing games like Rogue Legacy and Spelunky easier with a decent d-pad (I have the wireless 360 pad with improved D-pad)
I bought my dongle off Ebay a while back and haven't had any issues, but I made sure that the one I purchased was an official Microsoft product because I had noticed several cheaper knock-offs being sold under the guise of the real deal with identical packaging colors, etc. I'm not saying that off-brand parts are the cause of the issue here necessarily, but just wanted to throw that info out there as a potential cause of compatibility issues seeing as the Link is new hardware and a third-party part may deviate from the original just enough to cause problems in this unforseen circumstance.
For those who bought the official controller and dongle bundled together, this certainly shouldn't be an issue as I for one can attest that it DOES work for some people. Working out why others are having problems if they are indeed using identical parts could prove difficult.
Yeah some more info from Valve would be useful.
I have the official MS dongle and controller, but I'm having problems with the D-pad not working. I'm thinking it might be a batch issue problem, with some serial numbers OK and others not. I guess at this time, so early in the Link's release, we'll be waiting a while for a fix. But I agree with other posters, this completely renders the Link and most games unplayable right now - such a bummer. :(
When I initially plugged it into the Steam Link my controller would pair, but I had a blinking green ring on the controller. The d-pad did not work.
I installed some fresh batteries in my 360 controller (my old ones were almost dead) and re-paired.
My controller came up as #1 and the D-pad works now.
Try re-pairing your controller.
If that does not work, install your dongle on your PC and verify everything works properly.
After re-pairing mine works both when my dongle is on the PC or Steam Link.
Good luck!
