Greetings spirits!

Happy second week of Turnbound being out… Why does it feel like it has been longer?

We have a small update for you this week as we are focusing on a larger update for next week which will include Unranked Mode and some new things. We are keeping a close eye on the feedback and are thankful for your understanding if we haven’t had the chance to address a particular issue just yet. Things like improving the leaderboards or a fully offline mode generally take more time than balancing fixes. We ourselves are doing our best to find the right balance between prioritizing fixes, feature requests and new content.

If you have been here since the Demo, you know we aim to put out patches and fixes at least every week - we already did our first hotfix on Friday and this is our first real patch. In it, we have done our best to fix the most broken items, reworked the balancing, and implemented the most requested gameplay changes. Onto the patch notes:

General Balancing:

Hero Upgrades Costs

We’re lowering the cost of Hero upgrades - but that’s just the beginning. More improvements to the upgrade system are on the way, so stay tuned!

Cost Upgrade 1 -> 3 (was 7)

Alice Shop Ability: Wonderland Whirl

Uses increased from 3 to 4.
No more restriction of uses per round.

Wukong Ultimate: Stolen Thunder

Gained charges increased from 1 to 2.

Wukong Ultimate: Like a Dragon

Damage increased from 15 to 20 on the primary target.
Target changed from fully random to Taunt Items and Attack tiles.

Robin Ultimate: Poison Banquet

Poison 5 reduced to Poison 3.

Shop Re-roll Costs

Maximum cost for re-rolling decreased from 5 to 3.

Double Delight Trinket

Does no longer affect all consumables on the board, but the first 5 triggered uses.

Robin made a powerful entrance - maybe a little too powerful in some areas. We’ve made an initial balancing pass on a few of his items and abilities.

Deathbloom Cannon has been haunting plenty of unfortunate souls lately. To rein in this menacing plant, we’ve rolled out some major adjustments.

Content Update:

2 new Core Trinkets.
- "Makes you stronger”
  - Each time Invincible is triggered on your Board, all Attack Tiles gain +5 Power."
- “Uprising”
  - Every 3 Tiles that are destroyed on your Board, give +2 Power and +2 Health to your Attack Tiles.

Gameplay Changes:

When using a rematch token, the coin will now always flip the other way. This ensures that you can't randomly get the exact same outcome again.
Reduced the sell area to prevent accidental selling, added underglow to better highlight when a sell will occur.

Visual Changes:

Items in the shop now have a shadow, and a persistent rarity glow .

Bug Fixes:

Fixed a bug where you would not be granted Steam achievements if you had already unlocked the achievement in the demo. All missing achievements are automatically granted the next time you enter the main menu.
Fixed visual issues with Brambleline item, growth stage 5.
Fixed a hard crash caused by the item shake animation.
Fixed shield animation bug, which causes the taunt visual to break.
Fully charged items which wake up, now use their charges when they were supposed to use them before.
Fix a potential bug causing duplication of duel slots.
Fix a visual bug, when the Hero dies from poison and gets revived.
Duel code Inputfield now defaults to upper case letters
Share Code Popup does not cover the board anymore
First Monkey King Ultimate now targets taunt items or weapons if there is no taunt item
Fix a Bug where Revive would not trigger during Battle Start Phase
Pocket Watch now correctly brings Tiles to half Health of their current Health

Chain Attack bug?

I play Alice/Snack Attacks, the +! chain attack lasts until end of turn whether she uses them or not. Sleep or stun negates them. I haven't played Wukong but Monkey Fur gave +1 chain attack(x2 from adrenaline rush), that persisted every turn. Even after I destroyed it. Game Progression issues

Hey, Love a good Auto-Battler, and understands that this game is in early access. Couple of things that could be addressed easely and quickly in my opinion. 1. It shouldn't take 15 hours of grinding with a character to get it to lvl 8 and get all the base ability. 2. The match up system is weird, How often do I have to face players that have weirdly way too much coins spent at battle 1 to 3, and makes it obviously impossible... something is wrong here. 3. Leveling up your characters in game cost is wa...

When selecting rewards/trinkets, let us hide that popup to see our board

I forget all the stuff I have on my board so it would be nice to see it to make a more informed decision. It should function like at the end of a battle where you can click Hide/Show.

UPDATE: The original version of this review suggests that only winning builds are saved for general play. Though a representative for 1TK confirmed to Summit that user-created boards can face one another regardless of winning outside of the Duel mode, the version of the game as we covered it in our Early Access review could be seen as saying otherwise. Please see the dev comment on this review for a clarification of the board save state.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

Turnbound takes the challenge of building an autobattler in a bit of a different direction, though how successful it is in doing so is open to debate.

Turnbound is a board game-esque auto-battler. You play as one of three characters—Sun Wukong, Alice from Alice in Wonderland, and Robin Hood—each with their own unique abilities and desired combos. Players then buy tiles to place on their boards, creating a web of potential combos and strategies, all with the singular goal of annihilating their opponent. Players win when they reach ten victories against other players’ saved state boards, and lose when they run out of lives.

That each character has their own abilities gives each of the three characters their own strategy and feel. Playing Alice, for example, my primary goal is to chain enough potions that I win before my opponent has even really had a turn, with their first action triggering my special ability multiple times over. Playing Robin Hood, on the other hand, I don’t care about potions, instead finding ways to destroy tiles and donating the resulting coins to power up my own massive abilities.

However, while each character has their own specific feel and strategy, they do have access to a common pool of tiles. As Robin Hood, it’s possible for me to draw tiles intended for Sun Wukong, and vice versa, creating the potential for combinations beyond the expected. There are, as always, pros and cons to this. On the one hand, having a broad pool of shared items means items that work well in one build can potentially be adapted to another. On the other hand, the large number of items means one particular item, that could be vital for a particular build, can be hard to find.

Or, more frustratingly, that any items that fit a particular character and their abilities don’t show up for multiple turns, leading to a near-guaranteed loss.

It’s in the tiles and the mechanics within them that some of the flaws with the game design itself appear, making it clear how unintentionally frustrating this game can be.

Take, for instance, the process of acquiring tiles. The game alternates between battles and shops, with each shop being an opportunity to buy new tiles and new board spaces, and rearrange or upgrade the items already on the board. Players receive a limited number of coins with which to do these things—in the above example, I have twelve coins—with any leftover coins carrying over to the next round. Upgrading items requires having multiple of the same item, plus an extra coin to pay for the process of upgrading, and each board square costs a coin to unlock.

One immediate flaw is that there are not enough coins to upgrade boards in what feels like meaningful ways, especially with characters and builds that incentivise having a large number of objects. In the above example, for instance, my twelve coins vanish before my board meaningfully changes, with seven coins purchasing a hero upgrade, another coin applying the upgrade, and the remaining four coins either purchasing board space or a single object, leaving me with more or less the same board state as I move into the next battle. While some objects do offer the ability to generate coins within a battle, these objects are both rare and generate a negligible amount of coins.

The ultimate consequence of this lack of resources is that, while it encourages players to think strategically about their purchases, it also disincentivises experimentation and switching strategies over the course of a run. When buying and placing one object potentially runs through the entirety of the resources I have available for that turn, there is little incentive for me to change my build, especially when it’s unclear whether my build will actually benefit from having done so. If the first shop I see doesn’t have something immediately helpful, rerolling is also expensive enough to disincentivise exploring to see if there’s something better. Turnbound’s economy, then, disincentivises what I would consider to be one of the fundamental joys of deckbuilders and auto-battlers specifically. There is no space to experiment and to see if a new, unknown card can make numbers go brrrr.

While the economy design alone disincentivises experimentation, there is a more fundamental element of Turnbound’s game design that removes more of the joy of deckbuilding. Turnbound is nominally a multiplayer game. While there is no way for players to play against one another live, battles are played against another player’s saved board. However, unlike other saved state auto-battlers, Turnbound only saves the boards of the players who successfully win ten battles, with battles then being played against these boards at their various stages of victory. Unsuccessful boards—whether they win nine battles or zero—are not saved.

In the long-run, this also leads to the game becoming inaccessible to new players. When the only boards available to play against are those who have won, there is an endless power creep, with builds needing to be ever more efficient to survive even at the lowest levels. Setting aside the lack of room for exploration, Turnbound’s design will, if left unchecked, eventually create a game that’s unplayable to any but the absolute luckiest. It is deeply deterministic in a way that isn’t true of most deckbuilders or even auto-battlers. Recovering from a couple of bad rounds is nearly impossible, and the strategies for doing so are limited at best.

That said, Turnbound still brings something unique to the auto-battler table. Its approach of a board covered with tiles is an interesting one, and placing tiles strategically is a fun challenge all on its own. There is a satisfaction in watching a chain reaction win me the battle before it’s even begun, knowing that I have indeed placed every element of that chain correctly.

It is also worth considering that Turnbound is still in Early Access. While the game, as it currently stands, has flaws, none of these flaws are necessarily fundamental. There is enough potential within Turnbound that it is a game worth watching, even though its current state leaves a bit to be desired. While any individual run may be fun, anyone seeking something that allows the freedom that traditionally accompanies auto-battlers may want to wait and see how the game develops.

There are elements of Turnbound that are creative, unique, and interesting. There is potential here for an interesting auto-battler with fresh takes on strategic thinking within the genre. Instead, Turnbound is hobbled by designs that punish precisely the sort of creative thinking that draws players to deckbuilders in the first place. This is a game I want to enjoy, but it’s difficult when every round looks exactly the same as the one that came before, and I’m left staring at things I want to build, but can never afford to try.

Trackpad as mouse on SD

I would like to pick this up for Steam Deck while it's on sale, but only if it allows custom controller configurations. Does the game recognize the trackpads as mouse and putting the left/right clicks wherever I like? Or is there a detect controller button that can be disabled in the settings so I can configure it the way I'm describing? Thanks in advance for any info....

Early Access Review

I supported the Bazaar from early open beta, and even though I stopped playing, I still think it's a great game. This game does a lot of things much better in my opinion. I like the theming more, with the fairy tale aspect that I'm sure will be expanded on in time. I enjoy the length of games; perfect to jump in and do a run quickly if you don't have too much time to sit down and commit to a longer game. I love the "one more run" aspect that reminds me of the pull that games like Civilization had for me. I appreciate that it is PvP while being asynchronous, something that the Bazaar did very well. I can take as much time as I want between rounds without being rushed, taking time to refine my board and strategy without feeling like I am holding up the other players.

Admittedly, I do not have too much experience with auto-battlers. The Bazaar is really the only one I have put any real time in. However, as a lover of strategy games and games that reward critical thinking and discovering synergies, this game delivers. I would definitely recommend if you like slower-paced games where you can take time to analyze your builds (and other players' builds) and find out what works and what doesn't work. I also recommend if you are anything like me and enjoy competition, but don't necessarily like the high-pressure of playing live against other people.

Early Access Review

This game does all the little things so well. There is always the fine balance of having items that are powerful enough to be fun and make the hunt for them enjoyable, but also leave multiple ways to build for auto-battlers, and this does it perfectly so far, giving me confidence that it will be the case going forward as well. There is so much counterplay to things with the way thorns, poison, taunt, and spillover work.

The gameplay is smooth, the battles run great at the slowest or the fastest speeds. There is a great balance of having RNG since auto-battlers will never be able to avoid them, by the way the rematch system works, or how you can have your tiles pass along traits to one another, depending on how your setup looks. I look forward to continuing the journey with this game and seeing how it grows!
