Short, atmospheric horror RPG that's actually quite spooky on a first run through, mechanically solid, and stupidly good for its price. The main game is a bit too easy, but the expansion steps up the difficulty and the scares. Not much replay value however. 8.5-9/10 considering the price.


The game revolves around turn based combat and resource management, both of which are pretty solid, although relatively simple compared to other similar games.
If you thoroughly loot everything and avoid unnecessary fights, the game becomes really easy by the end. At a certain point you'll have so many resources that every fight ends up being trivial, including the final boss.
Trench Face really hits its stride with its atmosphere. The art style, soundtrack, and overall design work very well, and it's one of the first horror games to actually scare me in a long time.
Character choice feels pretty inconsequential. On a first run, you only have access to 3 characters whose different abilites aren't even super useful, and they are easy to obtain from the trader for 100 bucks for each of the other two characters abilites you didn't pick. One of the two characters you unlock after beating the game also doesn't feel super different, but the other one does kinda break the game (in a funny way).
The game doesn't have much replay value. There is limited enemy variety, no random map generation, and, like most horror games, stops being scary once you know what's coming.
The main game has a lot of limitations, but is extremely solid for a first playthrough, and is very well put together. Overall, it's good at being spooky and mechanically solid, although a bit too easy and lacks replayability.


The expansion does a good job at building off of the main game and is in many ways better.
The expansion is more difficult, more tense, and, imo, scarier. Resources are more scarce, saving is less spammable, and enemies are generally tougher than the base game, all of which serve to make the expansion more tense. There are also some pretty good scares in there with a new enemy that acts as the big bad for the expansion. The final fight in the expansion also adds something new that is absent from the entirety of the rest of the game, and is a much harder fight than the main games final boss, even while being stacked with resources.
The expansion introduces Rat enemies, which I think are a poor addition. They aren't really enemies as much as they are explosive roombas with eyes. If they spot you, they will chase you to the ends of the earth, and if they touch you, you instantly take 30 damage. There is no fight, you just get slapped. That isn't the problem though. The problem is that these things are everywhere within most of the bunkers, which have very tight environments. Avoiding them often comes down to sitting there and waiting for random pathing to give you a chance to slip through. I sometimes had to wait for several minutes waiting for rats to line up correctly so I could get through without getting hit. It's not hard to avoid them, it's just really tedious and annoying.
Outside of minor annoyances though, the expansion is super solid.


Trench Face is atmospheric, mechanically solid, and clearly made with a lot of love. For less than the price of a coffee, this game is really good. 8/10 on its own, 8.5-9/10 considering how cheap it is.
