Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa

Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa

Historical Flags and Symbols
This mod combines two graphics mod for DC: Barbarossa, and comes in two versions.

The regular version uses historical flags.

I've posted download links to Box, Dropbox, and the developer's website. If my Box account runs out of bandwidth (which it often does around the end of the month), use one of the other links or wait until the middle of the next month.

The mods should be downloaded into a safe place and unzipped. There are files inside that tell you what to do after you unzip them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Both versions of this mod should be compatible with most if not all other existing graphics mods.

This mod is designed for MANUAL INSTALLATION. You don't have to download and learn how to use any other programs (not that there's anything wrong with that).

This is a manual installation Steam mod and is NOT part of Steam Workshop (and never will be, if I can help it).

What that means is that if you ever verify the integrity of your installation, Steam will overwrite the mod with the original files. You should probably do this from time to time anyway, so always be prepared to reinstall the mod.

[The way you go about verifying integrity is to go into your Steam Game Library, right-click on the game title and go to 'properties', the last item on the drop-down menu. Once there, go to the 'Local Files' tab and click on 'verify integrity of game cache'. This is useful to know about because sometimes files get missed during installation or update, and replacing a missing file can save you having to reinstall the entire game].

After you unzip the mod to a safe place, copy and paste the mod's Steam folder to wherever you keep your Steam installation.

The mod mimics the game's folder structure, and the folders in the mod are set up in such a way that everything should fall into the right place.

I usually encourage people to back up their originals, but that's not strictly neccessary with Steam because if you don't like my mod, you can get rid of it by verifying the integrity of your game cache (see above) or just reinstalling the game.

If you like parts of it but not others, you'll have to roll up your sleaves and go poking around inside the mod.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What's in the mod:

Historical Flags and Symbols mod version 1.4 and Other Peoples' Mods version 1.2
=============================================================

The Steam version (and only the Steam version) bundles these two mods together so you only have to make one single mod installation.

These mods make a few changes to the graphic presentation, nothing more. They will have zero impact on any pbem games, and won't cause problems if one player uses them but another doesn't.

These mods are designed to be used with other graphics mods.

Other Peoples' Mods version 1.2
------------------------------------------------

This is a selection of textures that work well with each other and with Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa. These textures are mostly mapboard utility graphics, and should be compatible with any present and future mods for DC: Barbarossa that eventually come into being.

This mod does not include any textures that change anything that in other games might be referred to as grass textures. Grass textures are very much a matter of personal taste, and consequently I prefer to put together a mod selection that should be able to work with just about anything anyone comes up with.

The OPM mod gives you four things:

1) A new hexgrid

2) Lighter fog of war

3) Less cluttered border demarcation between areas under German and Soviet control

4) More detailed logistics symbols

The hexgrid comes from Kiddytoto's Colors of the East mod for Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue. I have not included any selected hex symbols because I haven't seen any that I considered to be an improvement over the vanilla graphics. Kiddytoto's contribution to this mod is only one modded texture, but it's a very important texture.

The fog of war graphics are lighter than the original and come from Krupp's RRRH-Sr Graphix mod V.2 for Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue. If you make the fog of war too light when it is turned on, you run the risk of not noticing when you're moving outside the 'known' area, not that you neccessarily have complete knowledge of what's in the unfogged area. If you make it too dark (as in the original version) it's not only oppressive but makes the hexgrid stand out in an unsightly fashion when it's turned on.

The border demarcation between controlled areas comes from Krupp's RRRH-Sr Graphix mod v.2 for Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue. It features a three pip per hexside border rather than a five pip per hexside border, so the pips along the border alternate with blank spaces of approximately equal size. If I were going to think about modding anything in this mod it might be to play around with making the colors of the pips less saturated or vibrant, but I'm not convinced that the end result justifies the effort of firing up Photoshop that many times, so I'm leaving well enough alone.

As I understand it, Vic commissioned several sets of textures from Frederic Genot. This is a set of logistics symbols from the zoomed-in and middle zoom settings of the map that Vic didn't use in the official release. I prefer the barge silhouette in the alternate textures, the halftrack HQ symbol, and the more easily identifiable currently used airfield symbol. The smallest set for the alternate graphics was missing, so I resized one of the larger ones to keep everything consistent. The potential airfield symbol is partially transparent to show that it's not in use.

Historical Flags and Symbols mod version 1.4
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a list of what the mod changes, by country:

Germany:

The mod uses a German roundel derived from the roundel on the Parteiflag.

The large, medium, and small headquarters flags are the Reichskriegflag, the German warflag. This is the flag that would have flown in front of any army or navy headquarters, as well as in front of administrative offices in any occupied territory.

The crossed anchors icon for the Wehrmacht navy is the emblem that was worn on the shoulder boards of the Kriegsmarine.

The Luftwaffe eagle icon has been repainted.

I have replaced the SS icon with the white SS runes on a black background.

The mod now uses the traditional Nato artillery symbol. The change will only appear with official patch 1.03m or higher. (Nato unit symbols are symbols, so they belong in this mod).

Romania:

The Romanian flag is now King Michael's warflag.

The national icon for Romania is now the Romanian cross (reportedly modeled on the German balkenkreuz).

Finland:

The mod uses the Finnish warflag from WW II. The Finnish warflag is unusual in that it uses a medieval swallowtail design with the national coat of arms mounted on the intersection of the two arms of the cross.

The national icon for Finland is the blue and white roundel that was used on infantry uniforms. The national coat of arms (gold lion rampant on a red shield) was used as well, and is available as an alternate texture.

The alternative would have been to use the airforce symbol. The Finnish airforce began using that symbol when the country was becoming independant during the aftermath of the Russian Revolution. A Swedish nobleman whose ancestor had gone crusading in the Baltic donated a personal airplane to Finland, the first airplane in what was to become the Finnish Air Force. To show their recognition Finland adopted part of the nobleman's coat of arms as their aircraft symbol. In the Middle Ages, if you had gone crusading in the Holy Land, you often added a Jerusalem Cross to your coat of arms. But if you hadn't gone all the way to the Middle East and had only crusaded with the Teutonic knights in Prussia or the Baltic, you removed half of the crossbars from the Jerusalem cross before you mounted it on your coat of arms. So that is why the Finnish Airforce was using a symbol that we now think of as a swastika long before the German Nazi Party came into existence. The Finnish Air Force swastika isn't really a swastika, it just looks like one. I didn't want to use the Finnish Air Force symbol as the national ID symbol because I always prefer to use national coats of arms instead, and on top of that I find it very confusing to see a swastika on Finnish units, even though I know where it really comes from.

Italy:

The national icon for Italy is now the coat of arms of the house of Savoy (white cross on a red shield with a blue border).

Hungary:

The icon for Hungary is now the national coat of arms with the crown of St. Stephen.

Soviet Union:

The Soviet Roundel now sports a hammer and sickle.

The Soviet flag has been repainted.

The icon for Soviet regulars is derived from the Red Army badges that were made out of enameled metal, and is a red star with a gold edge and a gold hammer and sickle mounted in the middle of the star.

The icon for troops from Siberia is identical to the icon for Soviet regulars, except that the red and gold star is shown against a green background. Siberia has lots of taiga and tundra, and both are green when not covered in snow.

The icon for Soviet conscripts is identical to the icon for Soviet regulars, but without the gold trim around the edge of the red star (a very small hammer and sickle on a red star).

The icon for Partisans is a simple red star cut out of fabric (no hammer and sickle).

The icon for Soviet Naval Infantry (the Black Death) is based on the fouled anchor that appears on Russian marine badges.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the non-swastika version only:

Historical Flags and Symbols mod version 1.4ns
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the same as Historical Flags and Symbols version 1.4, with two differences:

Germany:

The large, medium, and small headquarters flags are the military symbol used on German maps from WW II to designate armies and army groups.

Soviet Union:

The large, medium, and small headquarters flags are a version of the Red Army flag from WW II.

I had started to believe this flag was mythical, in spite of the fact that the Soviets sometimes painted the outline of the red star on their helmets. But then I saw a photograph of a flag being raised during the re-capture of Sevastopol, and it was very similar to the flag I've used as a headquarters symbol (and similar to a regimental flag as well).

For those that prefer the old-fashioned hammer and sickle flag, I've included it in the flag folders as _alt files. Just delete the file that is in use (there are actually three of them, one for each size), and then rename the hammer and sickle flag textures by trimming the '_alt' from their file names.

I've added a third set of links to the developer's website, so if my own personal accounts are ever down for any reason you still have options.

Thanks for the mod man! So much better with historical flags. I am not pro any of these regimes but the flags help with immersion and being historical.
Philippe_at_bay 3 May, 2016 @ 7:45am

The purpose of this mod is to represent all flags and symbols that were used by the different units in the game as accurately as possible within the constraints of the game engine. I am interested in vexillology, heraldry, and semiotics, not politics. You should never be allowed to forget who is doing what to whom, because when you bowdlerize evil you make it more acceptable. And then the bad guys win.

I've made a minor adjustment to the Other People's Mods part of the mod.

The orange-yellowish potential airfield symbol is now hollowed out and partially transparent.

The first post of this thread has been updated, and the links will take you to the new version of the mod.

Thank you for this mod. I appreciate the work you did.

Hi Philippe! Thanks for your work! I just cannot install your mod properly (ingame flags). Could you please advise a bit more precise? I just killed the graphics folder and put in the one you provided but afterwards the game gives an error messages and loads "fonts" forever. How do i do it correctly? Thanks a lot in advance!
Philippe_at_bay 4 Jun, 2016 @ 10:56pm
Did you unzip to an empty folder and read the installation instructions text file?

After you unzip the mod to a safe place, copy and paste the mod's Steam folder to wherever you keep your Steam installation.

The mod mimics the game's folder structure, and the folders in the mod are set up in such a way that everything should fall into the right place.

I don't understand what you mean by "killed the graphics folder", or even why you would want to go anywhere near it.

Just copy the mod's Steam folder to the directory that has your Steam folder, and the folder and file structure of the mod will do the rest.

But before you do any of that, you should probably verify the integrity of your Steam installation, in case things have gotten out of order.

Works now, thanks a lot! It was just my lack of knowledge with Windows.

This is a mod that is in progress, but only in the sense that I've finished it but haven't uploaded it yet.

I've had trouble finding and distinguishing between currently active and potential airfields.

In previous versions of the historical flag and symbols mod I had tried to highlight the difference by hollowing out the center of the potential airfields, with mixed results.

I've finally realized that the problem was probably that the active airfields didn't stand out enough.

So I've bitten the bullet and redone sixty-six (count 'em) textures. That was a lot of work for a very small effect, albeit an important one.

The symbol for potential airfields has reverted to Frederic Genot's original, a solid dark mustard yellow airplane silhouette.

The symbol for active airfields is now a silver-white airplane on a blue roundel.

The roundel is a bighter blue so you can find it in the clutter of the map, and it's also a little bit larger.

The colors should also help you think of the Luftwaffe.

I'll put together a release version of the mod and start uploading it in the next couple of days.

The Box links will now take you to the latest version of the mod.

The links to Dropbox and Vic's site take you to a slightly older version without the new airfield symbols. I plan to bring them up to date in the next day or two.

Great! Keep it on, please. I am so used to the mod and its look. Highly recommended.

How could i donate my mite? Do you have Paypal?

P.S.: The unzipped files contain an Iron Cross icon and a Red Star icon. What are they for?

Thanks your kind words.

The icons are for either replacing the standard vanilla icon ('B" for Barbarossa) which isn't very attractive, or for having desktop icons for parallel installs (e.g. different icons for Steam and non-Steam versions).

Sometimes you might want to have a game running under an older version and keep it separate from newer versions. And, truth be told, you tend to do that kind of thing when you're making mods.

I could have sworn there was a text file included that explained that. In case you missed it, or in case it dropped out somehow, here is what it said.

quote:

The mod now includes two desktop icons, one Soviet and one German.

I don't recommend attempting multiple installs of a Steam installation and I have no idea what would happen if you did.

You would probably want to use the alternate icons to distinguish a Steam installation from a Matrix installation (many people will have both), or if you just didn't happen to like the icon that comes with the game.

The icons are derived from photographs of the actual objects.

(And if you think you've seen these icons before, I used them in most of my PanzerCampaigns mods).

CHANGING A DESKTOP ICON:

To change the game's desktop icon in Windows XP or Windows 7, right click on the icon on your desktop.

The last item on the menu that appears should be 'Properties'.

Left click on 'Properties'.

You should be looking at a screen with six tabs. The one named 'Shortcut' should be the on that is selected.

The 'Shortcut' tab gives you three buttons to select: 'Open File Location', 'Change Icon', and 'Advanced'.

Left click on 'Change Icon'

You should be looking at a big square box with a highlighted image of the currently installed desktop icon. Underneath 'Look for icons in this file:' you should see the address for the current icon, and next to the address a 'Browse' button.

Left click on the 'Browse' button.

Navigate inside your computer to find the Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa folder. The exact path will vary depending on where you have Steam installed, but the path should look something like ...steam/steam apps/common/ Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa.

When you eventually find your way inside the Barbarossa folder you will see a DesktopIcon, a Red Star Icon, and an Iron Cross Icon.

The DesktopIcon is probably the one that's installed, and using one does not overwrite the others.

After you select the icon remember to click on the 'Apply' button or your new selection won't stick.

[Note: these directions are designed for Windows XP and Windows 7. Windows 8 and 10 probably do something similar, but I have no intention of learning how to use those particular systems].

Thanks a lot for your explanations and your time!

To make sure it is not overlooked: Any way to give back to you?
Philippe_at_bay 10 Dec, 2016 @ 9:07am
Thanks for asking and sorry for the belated reply.

I appreciate the sentiment, but part of a hardcore modder's ethos is that you do what you do out of a love for getting things right.

Philippe_at_bay 22 Jan, 2017 @ 2:20pm
The non-Steam version of the Historical Flag mod now comes combined and not combined with the Other Peoples Mod. The non-Steam version is available in the mod section of the Matrix site.

The combined and not combined options came about by accident, and didn't seem worth recreating for the Steam version. If anyone feels strongly about this give a shout, and I'll try to talk you through the changes that need to be made (assuming I can remember them).

Please note that this has nothing to do with what kind of symbols you use for German headquarters units.
