Play NieR: Replicant first - but you might like that one more

Pros

Deeper combat system compared to Replicant - the ability to add lifesteal, EXP and item drop rate increases to your playstyle allows you to switch up gameplay styles. You may find yourself needing to change your chip plugins to finish quests as well, which is a nice part of Automata's game design.
Light elements of soulslike gameplay - reclaiming your loadout from your previous body after dying - adds some nice tension to gameplay
Fast travel - a feature that had limited availability in Replicant, and whose lack thereof even became a metanarrative joke in that game - is present, and really cuts down on your map travel time. You will still have a lot of running around to do.
Aerial combat sections are just right, as is the hacking minigame
Great Japanese and English voice acting - even the credits music is localised
This game feels much bigger than Replicant. The map is really fun to explore - there were some places that I was surprised to be able to arrive at during my playthrough. In most other games you would have a death screen from trying to travel from the top of a cliff to the bottom of a ravine, so this was a welcome change
A decent amount of once-off enemy types, and overall great character design that overcomes the problem of same-looking, mass-produced robots in the story
Stable PC port - zero crashes on a 9060 XT + 5700X3D at 1080p60fps, with one unusual instance where the game went to 0 FPS for a few seconds in one part of the map
Some functions exist that help to improve repeat playthroughs - this allows players to have a second chance at some quests with trickier requirements
Enemy levels scale throughout the playthrough, which means that grinding levels isn't strictly necessary although possible
Native controller support

Cons
Surface level reading of philosophy - maybe asking for a boss named Hegel to be designed around the Owl of Minerva is slightly trickier ball knowledge, but names seem to be thrown around without significance unless a central character is involved
that one section where 2B has a logic virus and tries to quarantine herself - it's actually referenced in one of the trailers, but that vertical slice doesn't convey the frustration that can be had from that gameplay scenario. It's telling when the save file won't allow you to load from a quicksave halfway through the scene, as saving in the wrong place can softlock you quite easily. The inclusion of a timer + vertical movement without reliable jumping mechanics + aggressive enemies that will knock you off a cliff is a bit much
Some sections of the game have little to no autosave functionality - this is fine as a design choice, but it will affect people who have limited time between play sessions
Choosing to start some quests ahead of others can cause unintended story progression - perhaps this encourages replays, but it's frustrating to feel hurried along by the game before you discover that chapter select functionality is present .
DLC feels a bit too grindy - with some planning you can end up at level 60-70 by the end of the game, but you are recommended to finish the DLC with level 70-80 or above.
The map mechanic is designed to be slightly difficult to use, which sometimes makes movement unnecessarily painful because of the expansive layout of some areas
Some quests have very confusing unlock requirements that are difficult to make sense of without a guide
A lot of Automata's impactful story moments benefit from having played NieR: Replicant. This is listed as a con because in the same vein, your personal enjoyment of Automata's story is reliant on whether or not you played Replicant
The shop that allows you to make the final upgrade to each of your weapons is tedious to access

Closing words
Playing NieR: Replicant is a must to better appreciate some of the events that occur in this game
This port was historically known for being bad, but is very playable - and has been - since at least 2021
Not a bad game to explore and get lost in - be sure to save whenever and wherever

Other notes
9S' Japanese voice actor really sells the story, and the performance goes a long way in relieving any hard feelings towards the character when all is said and done
Controller is strongly recommended
Do yourself a favor and play Replicant first

Lost to first boss, had to start a new game?

So everything I did and all I've fought was for naught just for dying to that colossus with grinding gears as hands? Am I missing someting? I know the game says "you'll figure out how to save lately in the game", but did I miss it? How cruel could the devs really be to force a new game just for dying to the first bos.. lol...
