An interessting entry in the bioshock series that is sadly unable to come close to it's predecessors.


After Bioshock 1 & 2, I went and played infinite, not knowing what to expect. All I ever saw about this game was a town floating in the sky.



Story:
The story was always a strong part in the Bioshock games. Infinite's story was interesting and managed to hook me. It was filled with mysterious and confusing moments that only started to make sense later on in the game. You play as a guy called Booker. He's tasked with finding a girl and bringing her back "to wipe away the dept". You reach a lighthouse with your rowboat. It reminds me of the lighthouse from the first Bioshock. Instead of going down into Rapture, you get launched high up into the sky. You start to see a city floating in the clouds. It's Columbia. A couple moments later, you find yourself being the most wanted man. You fight your way through Columbia to find the girl. On your way, you will find out more about Columbia's history and religious beliefs. This game looks and feels like a bioshock game but it's still different in its own way.

Gameplay:
Infinite's gameplay does not differ much from the previous games. You follow a story, explore places and find ammo and money. You can buy weapon ugrades with money now. It’s like the old Bioshock‘s but with a focus on shooting.

Combat:
Combat feels like the old games but with a bit more Polish. Especially the reload animations are very smooth and good looking. You have a shield this time around that works like the Borderlands or Halo shield. You don’t cary medkit’s anymore. Instead, you have to find health in your environment or buy it at a shop.



Shooting Gallery:
Bioshock Infinite feels like a shooting gallery. When you enter an area, you can tell, it's an arena where a fight will break out. In the older bioshock's, the rooms and architecture felt natural like people would actually live there. In infinite, the combat is fun and the levels are well designed for fights but that came at the cost of believability. I just see a room and I think to myself "yeah, this is an arena where enemies will spawn" and I was always right.

Performance:

Hud scaling is broken. You have to change it in an .ini file.

Tabbing out of the game and leaving it like that turns my pc into a jet engine. For some reason, it uses more CPU ressources when tabbed out which causes my CPU to reach more than 90 degrees celsius. This behavior reminds me of memory leaks. A quick Google search explained to me that it's probably a so called "ressource/handle leak" which continuously consumes more processing power over time without releasing it. I've played over 100+ games on Steam and I have never experienced this. (It's probably mining Bitcoin while I'm tabbed out lol).

Save System:
The saving system is not good. You can't save manually and the game won't make an exit save. I've lost some progress because of this. You have to wait and look out for the auto save symbol in the top right corner to appear before closing the game. This is dumb.

Weapon Speed Upgrade:
The weapon upgrades are generally good and I don't have many problems with it. The only upgrade I have a problem with is the reload speed upgrade. Upgrading the reload time of weapons speeds them up to the point of not being really visible. All the animation detail gets lost.

Boss Difficulty:
The game is mostly easy but the difficulty can suddenly spike on a specific boss battle. It was quite an annoying fight that felt so unnecessarily hard. really killed the mood.



Bioshock infinite is a fun and entertaining game with a story that hooked me to the end but…it did not hit as much as the first to games. The game has parts that are stronger then in previous Bioshock's but there were also parts that were weaker. I still recommend playing the game.
