Nearing 50,000 games ignored
Something is to be said about how Steam will allow anything to be uploaded for sale on their platform. I have been having a good laugh lately at how bad it has become.

Currently, mobile games with in game purchases that circumvent Steam are the all the rage. I have seen well over 40 candy crush knockoffs and poker games in my suggest games from Steam. I guess because I played Idle Champtions a while back.

For example: mobile game with in game purchases

I have also noticed a slew of copy pasta games, where the developers are not even trying. They will put up 20 games or more in a month. I guess if you throw enough at the wall, something might stick. Maybe someone will accidentally buy one?

https://steamhost.cn/app/2387820/Beach_Gas_Gas/?curator_clanid=27350239
https://steamhost.cn/app/2124590/City_Bus_Driver_Simulator/?curator_clanid=27350239
https://steamhost.cn/app/2363810/Long_Truck_Simulator/?curator_clanid=27350239
https://steamhost.cn/app/1988990/Animals_Transport_Simulator/

We have many games to look forward to though, of asset flips and generic game releases by one off developer names. I have seen a couple that accidentally released the same game under different developer names. I guess they lost track. I used to find it frustrating, but now it is just comical. Steam will publish anything.

TL;DR- didn't read the entre thread because i don't need to see people arguing about how many apps Steam has in its store right now, or the usual "Well, don;t buy them, then." comments. So if someone else has mentioned this already- my apologies for skipping from Page 1 to Page 4 and missing it.

I will say that I have been seeing more and more "mass publishing" of games by certain developers and publishers, that either price the games ridiculously high but offer huge bundles at 90%+ discounts, or publish a large number of games that look exactly the same or with a very slight reskinning and renaming- many of which look suspiciously like asset flips from various game engine stores, some with many ties found between the various names they are using for development and publishers.

I mark them all Ignored, but it smells a lot like Digital Homicide and Silicon Echo and the asset flip games they sold under multiple alts. Not saying those two are back at it, but it looks too similar to ignore. Perhaps other people trying to rehash the same technique, hoping Valve and consumers will have already forgotten it all, or are new enough to the platform that they never heard of them.

I see no issue here as long as the games don't violate the restrictions of what Steam allows developers to sell and not sell on Steam, at that point the developers can indeed release what they wish, Steam is a game distribution platform, not an exclusive platform.

Indeed. It used to bother me, as many of these games are not a complete game. Not even enough there to be called a demo, which actually is against the terms. But we have seen that Steam does not uphold that.

At least Steam is fair across the board. They do not seem to pick and choose who to enforce rules on. Aside from the prior example, setting up outside Steam for in game purchases was something I had read against the terms as well. Maybe they changed it, as I have not read the terms in about a year.

I love to support Indie developers, but it is sometimes difficult to judge who is a real indie developer and who is doing spam game releases that they will never pursue. I am stoked to have found a brilliant game called Sir Whoopass. Definitely an indie developer worth supporting, in my opinion.
youtube is your friend...

using the ignored feature that much shows that something is working
and the user is engaged in steam activity.... win win...

the less we use the service the harder they would have to work
to get something you may want to use....

I agree, there are some games out there that are clearly for the money but its sometimes hard to really know till after you buy them and at that point is a bit late, like one game i loved was an space idle game but the man DID AT LEAST WARN that he was just doing the game during covid and that it was just a side hobby on the store page and the game is 100% free, no microtransactions, the amount of backlash he's got as of late because as he said, he's doing it while in lockdown is so insane.

Indeed. The game publishing numbers have escalated significantly, but fortunately, ignoring things works beautiful. I would say more than half of what I ignored is the trash, probably around 30,000. About 18,000 is just not my style of game, no longer supported but still in the store, or games that are online and dead, leaving them empty of their purpose any longer.

Indeed. I have a couple games like that, which I hope the developer comes back eventually. They are in school or busy with work that pays their bills. But the games show promise. I research games before I buy them, if I see something interested. I have been fortunate to have only ever refunded two games to this point in fifteen years.

Now you mentioned it... can you ignore a whole publisher for example?

Wow, that is deep. You should put that on a shirt or a bumper sticker.

Yes, but that does not work. I have Electronic Arts ignored, not bought anything from them since Mass Effect 3. They are constantly on my store page and not shown as ignored.

Fairly close to the depth of a brag about the length of one’s blacklist. :homelol: You expected “woah woah people release crummy products” to have some weight?

Maybe I will do some tests with beta client since many things there changed.

Thanks for the heads up

No, but I am taking it that you are impressed and somehow jealous. I am just here for conversation about gaming.

Something tells me that guy's never heard of Hideki Kamiya.
On that note, I've had that particular Steam General drone blocked for a long time now.
Kamiya would be proud, I'm sure. :LaughingOwlcat:
