Will a 160 mm cpu cooler fit well in a case with max cpu cooler clearance of 165mm?
Hi

3 years ago I bought a pre built system for gaming, it is currently working well but cpu temps are a little off. Maybe it needs a new layer of therma paste, or the current cooling system isn't working well anymore I don't know, but the average temps while gaming is 70°, with peaks of 80-90 under 100% usage (such as shader building)

the cpu is an i7 12700k with a 120mm aio cooler, which I hear not being great (why though? is the radiator too small?)

Anyways I'd like to swap it for an air cooler, for instance a Noctua DH-15S; this thing has a 160mm height fan included, and the case allows max 165mm for cpu coolers. Do you think this combo could work, or the extra space is too small for a good air flow?

Thanks and sorry for whatever tech-heresy I might have said.

If the Case can fit 120mm rear case fan then having 160mm tall CPU cooler shouldn't be an issue as long as no case fan on side panel.

Yea 8th Gen i7 or later should have at least 240mm if using an AIO.

Why not just get a different Case that allows a bit more room and cooling options; such as more case fan placements; or larger ones; like 140-200mm case fans for example and room for AIO w/ 280mm RAD

The side panel is tempered glass only.
For reference the case is ATHENA M2 ELITE from gamdias, it ain't that bad but I'm no expert.

Do you have any recoomendations for a good case? I don't care about rgb much
Lian-Li
BeQuiet
Corsair
Cooler Master
all have some good choices; various layouts, pricing ranges, sizes...
Or buy AIO 240 But no need mounting it, just put it at the top of your case,
I might try getting a new case, but right now I'd like to fix the issue (although temporarily)

I guess I'll try to get that cooler, and if it doesn't stick I'll refund it through amazon...

The noctua website says I should be fine, I hoped to hear from someone that has the same/similar config
Get one thats flush at the top...

Like this for example:

Not like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BNDTJVPL
Iam using deepcool assasin 4 on a fractal define 7 compact, thats bigger than those two, using b550f strix mobo
Again was just an example; I'm not saying "buy this cooler"
Iam just saying how small is fractal design 7 compact, and i can using robust cooler, if those cooler smaller than mine, he should be fine
Most coolers don't get any taller, just wider.
It's the ones with the little heat-pipe pointed ends you have to watch out for; those can easily add 5mm or more and then you can't close the side panel on some Cases.
