Yes, I've worked for American companies (last one was NOV[www.nov.com], and they have to follow Norwegian laws.
For example, when you get hired you're on a 3 month trial. During that period, if you quit or get fired, you're entitled to one month of pay, and have to work that period.
After the 3 month trial, the same as above applies, but for 3 months (3 month's pay if you quit or get fired).
Whether you have to work or not in the 1 or 3 month period after quitting or especially getting fired can be negotiated (probably don't want to work in a place where you get fired, nor would the employer want to have you around), but you're entitled to the full payment.
