Civilization VI” is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash.
I keep getting an error that says "Civilization VI is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash." " this file was downloaded on an unknown date". i deleted and downloaded it back over a thousand times, I even bought a cleaner app to clean everything including steam on my macbook but it never worked. my macbook air is new with an m2 chip and there is enough space

can anyone help?

The damaged error is a known problem which often comes up in the Civ VI Mac thread. Basically Aspyr's Gatekeeper status is broken somehow.

After trying to launch Civ 6 and getting the error, go to System Settings, Security section, and there should be an Open Anyway button you can click.

I don't know about the unknown date thing, though. Might be the same problem, I haven't seen it myself.

There's instructions in this thread on how to make the problem go away: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/app/289070/discussions/0/3589961352685586630/?ctp=34#c6699729218445755807

Aspyr botched the code signature that Gatekeeper checks for validity. It's only valid if you install all the DLC. I checked this myself by using Apple's codesign tool (and buying all the DLC, before refunding it!).

When the DLC isn't installed, codesign spews output like this:

/Users/user/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization VI/Civ6.app: a sealed resource is missing or invalid file missing: /Users/user/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization VI/Civ6.app/Contents/Assets/DLC/Expansion2/UI/Additions/DiplomacyActionView_EmergencyRow.xml file missing: /Users/user/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization VI/Civ6.app/Contents/Assets/DLC/Expansion2/Platforms/Windows/audio/German/1028630754.wem file missing: /Users/user/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization VI/Civ6.app/Contents/Assets/DLC/Expansion1/platforms/windows/audio/XP_Common_Notifications.xml

When the DLC is installed:

/Users/user/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization VI/Civ6.app: valid on disk /Users/user/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization VI/Civ6.app: satisfies its Designated Requirement

I put in a ticket to Aspyr support a month ago with my findings. No response so far.

I suspect they did that ♥♥♥♥ on purpose but then again, why would a big corporation use such unethical tactics for sales? surely no one would think of that...

It's just incompetence rather than malice. There's no way for the average user to know that the problem can be solved by getting all the DLC, so it can't be a driver of sales.

Incidentally, I checked up on my ticket with Aspyr support: they'd marked it as "solved". It's not solved. I've resubmitted the ticket, which is probably futile.

You shouldn't have to to get rid of this error. Just do this:

After receiving the "damaged" error message,
- Open the Mac System Settings.
- Select "Privacy and Security".
- Select "Security Settings"
- In the Security Settings, you should see a prompt saying "Civilization VI was blocked..." Click the "Open Anyway" button under this text.
- Enter your system password if prompted.

If you actually want all the DLC for other reasons, buy the Civ 6 Anthology here on Steam.
