"this thread was quite old blah blah blah"
so? Why not let conversations continue and consolidate information in one thread instead of having people spam the boards with the same topics? Why is it better to have multiple threads about the same thing instead of one thread where all the information is consolidated for people to read?

Old threads are referential. If you want to ask something or say something about the topic that the old thread is about, then make another thread and link to the old one as a reference.

People who run these forums don't know how to operate a proper forum.
They want it quick and dirty like a news feed. In and out, bang bang

Because old threads can contain bad and outdated information. Hence why its been said the best thing to do is make a new thread and then link the old for reference if its relevant.

Actually closing old threads being bumped is pretty standard across every major forum

It's not bumping when someone adds a useful information.
In these trash forums every interaction past 3 weeks apparently confuses people because everyone is mentally challenged. That's a discrimination, valve.

It is still bumping it. Even if they added useful information that doesn't change the fact that the older posts people might read are outdated.

Again though, you made a false claim that Valve doesn't know how to operate a proper forum when pretty much all proper forums treat necroing posts the same.

The CORRECT way to do it was already stated, make a new thread and link back to the old one

Steam never act unless at the bare minimum a single person reported the topic. Then they check if it is worth acting upon.

So the correct answer to your question is: because it annoy other users and those other users want the thread closed.
