Consistency error.
It seems if you download a map (VPK) from a third party website and then decide to play on a server that downloaded the exact same map but from the L4D2 Steam Workshop (or vice versa) then it won't work.

Why not delete the workshop subfolder and make it so all items from the L4D2 Steam workshop are added into the addons folder instead, wouldn't this solve all issues?

It's easily reproducable by giving the addon a different file or directory name as the one on the server. The only effective workaround is to disable sv_consistency server side.

For your idea, the filenames would have to be consistent as well, and that might cause issues if the orignal filenames are used, and multiple addons have the same name.

I take my map as an example:

The vpk on all third party websites is named: helms_dr18
and the vpk from the Steam Workshop is named: 121068229

The only difference between these 2 vpk files is the name of the vpk, the content in them is exactly the same. The one from the Steam Workshop was basically copied, renamed to helms_dr18 and then uploaded to third party websites.

To fix the consistency error(?): The name of the vpk file on all third party websites needs to be renamed back to 121068229. But then as you say the directory name needs to be the same - but can't people that download the vpk from third party websites install the vpk by placing it in the workshop subfolder instead of the addons folder? Wouldn't that do the trick?

I have the one from the Steam Workshop installed

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=121068229&searchtext=

and this is the error I sometimes get when joining public games (games in progress):

If I remember it right, either the mac version of the game or the addon installer does that to long vpk filenames.

Here's a different screenshot:

I keep getting this error almost everytime i'm trying to join a server. It works 100% when I host my own local server but then I must also use the console command "sv_consistency 0" to make sure that other players can join so they don't receive the error.

What if all servers had sv_consistency set to 0 by default for survival mode and campaign mode, but when you play versus mode or scavenge mode the sv_consistency is 1 for all servers(?).

This seems to be fixed in the stable version of the game now. I tested it with workshop campaigns on the client and directly downloaded campaigns on the server.

@ Rectus

What exactly did you test?:

Client with map from third party website in addons folder:

1. Client with map from third party website in addons folder and server has the map from Steam Workshop in addons/workshop folder.

2. Client with map from third party website in addons folder and server has the map from Steam Workshop in addons folder.

3. Client with map from third party website in addons folder and server has the map from third party website in addons/workshop folder.

9. Client with map from Steam Workshop in addons folder and server has the map from the Steam Workshop in addons/workshop folder.

10. Client with map from Steam Workshop in addons folder and server has the map from third party website in addons/workshop folder.

These I know work fine:

16. Client with map from third party website in addons folder while server has the map from third party website in addons folder.

Only number 13. The client maps where straight up subscribed from the steam workshop. I tested with Diescraper, and I Hate Mountains 2 which is multi-part on the workshop.
Rectus 21 May, 2013 @ 10:58am
Also sucessfully tested cases 1, 2 and 12.
SeriouS_Samurai 21 May, 2013 @ 11:30am
Using Helm's Deep Reborn map I tested case 12 on my friend's Steam Group Servers in the current L4D2 (not the Beta with EMS/Linux), got consistency error everytime I joined the servers.

What files are you getting the consistency error on? You might still get issues if your campaign has files that override the base game files.

Edit: I tried to test with Helms Deep, but I'm just getting the "Map_LoadModelGuts: Map with no texinfo" whenever I connect to the server.

"Map_LoadModelGuts: Map with no texinfo"; My friend received this error on his Steam Group Servers when trying to play Helm's Deep Reborn, he simply verified integrity of game cache which solved the problem. However I had to verify integrity of game cache 2 times before I could join his servers without getting the error.

Will something be done about consistency errors? A lot of people can't play custom maps for L4D2 due to consistency errors.

I got the same problem with my survival map ....
I think this is one of the reasons why people don't like to use the workshop to get maps + the search engine .
