Rules for what can and can't be uploaded?
Specifically, nude mods, or just "sexy" ones (Zoey in a bikini, for example).
Just curious. because I don't remember hearing what the rules are for Steam profiles.
Not even sure about profile avatars or screenshots either.
Would like to ask to have this clarified so nobody risks getting in trouble in the future.

Here is the Workshop Contribution Agreement:
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/workshop/workshoplegalagreement

You have also agreed to the Steam Subscriber agreement https://steamhost.cn/subscriber_agreement/ which contains https://steamhost.cn/online_conduct/

Thanks, Chet... but I always have difficulty understanding legal talk.
Could you or someone else just simply answer "yes" or "no" if nude mods are allowed?
Nude Zoey was fairly popular in the past, but, I'd probably only upload her in a bikini.

I skimmed through what you linked and I can't find anything about nudity.
So what is and is not allowed on Steam profile, and the future Workshop?
Again, this is concerning both Workshop and Steam profiles.
Might as well cover all the bases... wondered about this for a few years.

I think it would be best to stick with nudity/gore shown within l4d2 and to not excede it. For example, keep them clothes, but not on a bikini, as it might be pushing it too much .While l4d2 has gore of broken limbs and decapitation. SHowing realistic images or choped private parts would be way off imo.

I remember in Greenlight about an adult game that got removed. So, my suggestion is to not upload explicit content.
Trunten 11 Dec, 2012 @ 9:10pm
Maybe I should just break this down...
l4dmaps.com allows uploading nude mods, or sexy mods.
I was simply asking what Valve and Steam Support's stance is on this content.
Are we allowed to upload such content onto the workshop, yes or no?
Just curious because I've seen content like this in people's screenshots.
But it wasn't content the games in question already had.
Only heard rumours about people being disciplined over avatars so far.
I also wondered about such content in Steam profiles... but that's another topic.
You say the game already has its own nudity and gore...
What is the harm if people want a nude Zoey or a bikini Zoey?
Asking because I could contribute and upload more content for testing...
However, I want to be safe first. "Better safe than sorry... *cough*...."

No nude mods, please. "sexy" is subjective enough that I can't give you a blanket answer.
Chet 12 Dec, 2012 @ 4:00pm
In general, we don't explicitly define what can and cannot be uploaded to avoid the issue where people claim since it wasn't listed - it must be okay. Inappropriate content will be removed.

Repeated uploading of removed content or known problematic content will be the only real issue - so just use your head.

Okay, thank you for the reply.
I suppose we'll have to wait for Chet to be more clear (and he replied as I wrote this).
I couldn't really find/understand much in those legal sounding links.
With Left 4 Dead being the gory violent game it is, with profanity, I often wondered...
There's already a mature rating on it, so I was just simply curious.
Probably was only going to share the bikini version and see how that goes first.

Sorry for repeating myself, but I just wondered because of what I see on Steam profiles.
Mainly in screenshots, but sometimes profiles themselves, including avatars.
This often makes people wonder how far we can go in customizing the game.
Except now, the workshop is an official medium by Valve and Steam.
Just wanted to be on the same page with everyone.

One way I looked at it was... Left 4 Dead's already got a mature rating...
Why should we try to censor a mature game as Left 4 Dead when it's already mature.

Can I bring about a few examples, and if possible, get staff's opinion on allowance of:
a) A model replacement ported from non-Valve game. Say, Mario was ported over and now replaces Coach.
b) A model replacement, ported from a game developed / co-developed / published by Valve.
c) This one is more detailed: say, there is a mod (there actually is), that replaces pain pills item with a beverage can. The model/texture/sound is a joint work of several authors, everything is custom. However, the label features (not resembles, but absolutely the same) a logo that is a registered trademark, say, Pepsi (and thus is intellectual right blablabla).
d) Finally, a music/sound replacement. This is something that gets restricted the most on other sites, even if previous examples are ok. Well, Benny Hill's theme for Tank probably isn't that much of infringement, but how about well known songs, movie themes and soundtracks from other games?

Urik has the other concern I was about to bring up once I had mine clarified.

One last matter with mine... referencing content already in the game...
Since it's already in the game (Mercy hospital's zombies with butts exposed)...
And even the boomer and spitter have some "jiggly" parts...
Then we have the witch in the game... almost naked anyway!
I would really like to contribute and upload my Bikini Zoey.
When it was developed, it was a joint effort, so exposure getting it out would be nice.

I think the answers you're looking for are in section 4 of the Workshop Contribution Agreement:

You've got to remember that although the game is rated 18, as anyone who's played online knows, its full of little kids, also workshop items are viewable online to people of any ages via the website, so make sure what you post is suitable - I’m sure the last thing Valve wants is loads of angry parents moaning at them... We (GameBanana) got rid of our 18+ section about 5 years ago now as it was just causing too much hassle, I know smaller sites such as L4Dmaps allow this sort of content, but for large sites (and companies) it can be a right pain in the arse.

In regards to porting, again this is another problematic area in the mod scene.

We're quite strict on porting and copyright infringement as in the past we've had several legal challenges from companies such as EA and (in regards to part C) drinks companies such as PepsiCo and Monster Energy who have, in past forced us to take content down.

We therefore disallow any porting, unless specific permission has been given by the company which owns the content. (These are listed in our porting whitelist)

http://gamebanana.com/wikis?page=porting_whitelist

Does valve have a whitelist anywhere / any processes to pick up things which potentially violate IP laws, or do you just delete content upon request?

----------------------------------------------------

I know it’s a bit off-topic but would someone from Valve be able to check our current Valve porting rules are up to date?

Thank you, Jonny, that's another example I wanted to bring up.
Parents let their children play such mature rated violent and gory games like Left 4 Dead...
So I really don't think having nude or sexy mods is going to harm kids any more than a mature game with violence and gore may have already done.
If parents allow their children to play such games, then why should it matter?
My point was since we obviously can't control what players view and put into their games...
Why censor a mature game such as Left 4 Dead?
I've never heard of profiles being moderated, avatars and screenshots more specifically.
It's already suffered from Australia and Germany.
Oh well, I guess no one else understands the points I'm trying to make.
Can't argue with Valve, don't want to ruin anyone's fun here.

I'm going to try bumping this because some of my "mature" mods were recently stolen.
But there has been a lot of other "mature" content uploaded over the years.
Perhaps some of us are still curious about the rules even after all of this time...
