You can always try applying a particle system to a model!

I would recommend searching through the particles in the hl2 folder. It's got some pretty cool fire particle effects under hl2 > particles > fire. You can use the particle editor tool to choose which effect you want as well.

also, dota 2 has a few different neat fire and fire-type particles under the world_environment_fx.pcf if you have that stuff!
